Using Infographics To Educate Stem Students About Interpersonal Communication, Anna Ziesak 2018 Montana Tech

Using Infographics To Educate Stem Students About Interpersonal Communication, Anna Ziesak

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the viability of infographics in educating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics students about interpersonal communication skills. To determine if infographics are viable tools, the study used two surveys to gather information. The first survey was formatted as a needs assessment and revealed three areas with which STEM students wanted help: presentations, group projects, and communication. Three infographics were created to address these concerns, and a second survey was used to assess these infographics. Results from the second survey indicate that STEM students learned new information from the infographics and wanted to see ...

Modern Chinese Essays: Zhou Zuoren, Lin Yutang And Others, Tonglu Li

World Languages and Cultures Publications

Modern essay, or creative nonfiction prose, whose success almost surpasses that of poetry, theater and fiction,1 was born out of the marriage of traditional Chinese and Western culture.2 On a superficial level, it distinguishes itself from traditional essay by using vernacular instead of classical or literary Chinese, and thus is more accessible to the masses. In terms of genre, it is narrower in scope than traditional essay which includes all non-verse writings, literary or not. More importantly, as Yu Dafu points out, modern essay values the expression of individuality and personality more than any other writings.3 By ...

Dimensions Of Online/Offline Social Communication: An Extension Of The Hyperpersonal Model, Devin Joseph Kelly 2018 Cleveland State University

Dimensions Of Online/Offline Social Communication: An Extension Of The Hyperpersonal Model, Devin Joseph Kelly

ETD Archive

With the rise of technology it becomes important to measure and analyze the communication patterns that are emerging from these changes. Technologies open up different communication patterns for individuals to use (Tomas & Carlson 2015; Walther, 1996; Wei & Leung, 1999). Thus, this study develops the “ASOHIO” perspective, which incorporates a range of new and old communication patterns, online communication, offline communication, synchronous communication, asynchronous communication, interpersonal communication, and hyperpersonal communication. This work also looks to extend the hyperpersonal model greatly by developing an actual multi-item scale to measure the construct at the individual level. Walther’s (1996) basic description of hyperpersonal communication breaks ...

Architecture In A Book, Daniel J. Naegele

Architecture Publications

In 1955, the year in which his renowned chapel at Ronchamp was completed, the Swiss-French architect, Le Corbusier—perhaps the most influential architect in the world at the time—drew a book for the Livres d’Artiste series produced by the famous publisher, Tériade. The series was begun in 1943 and featured books by Rouault, Bonnard, Laurens, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Léger, and Gris. Le Corbusier’s Le Poème de l’angle droit [1] was comprised of a poetic text written in a broad, cursive script and twenty full-page lithographs (32cm x 42cm). The lithographs were to be removed from the ...

Fake News: Latinos, Representacion, Ciudadanizo Y Trump, Grace Thieme

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis uses in-depth analysis of historical Los Angeles Times articles to trace the changing representations of the Latino community in the media. Focusing on themes of patriotism and citizenship, this thesis draws out the subtleties of syntax and semantics that silently influence public opinion. The Zoot Suit Riots and the Chicano Moratorium serve as the main historical backdrop, leading to a concluding exploration of Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric surrounding immigration and the Latino community.

La Aculturación En La Comprensión Lectora De Los Estudiantes Universitarios: La Valoración En El Uso Polifónico De Las Citas, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

Using Hashtags To Disambiguate Aboutness In Social Media Discourse: A Case Study Of #Orlandostrong, Nicholas DeArmas 2018 University of Central Florida

Using Hashtags To Disambiguate Aboutness In Social Media Discourse: A Case Study Of #Orlandostrong, Nicholas Dearmas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the field of writing studies has studied digital writing as a response to multiple calls for more research on digital forms of writing, research on hashtags has yet to build bridges between different disciplines' approaches to studying the uses and effects of hashtags. This dissertation builds that bridge in its interdisciplinary approach to the study of hashtags by focusing on how hashtags can be fully appreciated at the intersection of the fields of information research, linguistics, rhetoric, ethics, writing studies, new media studies, and discourse studies. Hashtags are writing innovations that perform unique digital functions rhetorically while still hearkening ...

Color Theory In Technical Communication, Kelly J. Conley

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

Technical communicators tend to overlook or avoid using color in their work. However, color theory is a powerful tool that can greatly affect how information is presented in print or on the web. By using color, technical communicators can help users respond to information in a positive manner and increase reading comprehension, usability, and organization. This paper will provide a framework and examination of the theoretical side of color theory as well as applications for using color in the workplace.

Research And Rhetorical Purpose: Using Genre Analysis To Understand Source Use In Technical And Professional Writing, Lee-Ann K. Breuch, Brian Larson

Brian Larson

This chapter describes a pilot study of student research-based writing in a technical and professional writing course designed for college-level juniors and seniors across the curriculum; fifteen analytical research papers are coded based on the rhetorical move John Swales (1990) calls "reference to previous research" to increase our understanding of how students use sources to introduce, support, or compare/contrast ideas and previous research. Student papers in this study overwhelmingly used sources to support main ideas, occasionally used sources to introduce ideas, often in the form of topic sentences, but rarely used sources to compare/contrast ideas. The frequency ...

Creating Effective Style Documents: A Practicum In Trade Publication, Kristen Tardio 2017 Kennesaw State University

Creating Effective Style Documents: A Practicum In Trade Publication, Kristen Tardio

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

It is no secret that the field of publication thrives on collaboration: among publishers, editorial and production team members, designers, marketing and publicity staff, sales representatives and promoters, authors, illustrators, reviewers, and, of course, readers. However, an equally important yet less-explored relationship exists within this industry, between publishing staff and a text itself. As such, despite this crucial connection, the technical means by which the final product is created may also be overlooked.

This practicum examines these technical resources: style guides/sheets (especially for house style), their creation, and their usage in publishing, specifically how they pertain to sales material ...
