After generations of being rendered virtually invisible by the US academy in critical anthologies and literary histories, writing by Latin Americans of African ancestry has become represented by a booming corpus of intellectual and critical investigation. This volume aims to provide an introduction to the literary worlds and perceptions of national culture and identity of authors from Spanish-America, Brazil, and uniquely, Equatorial Guinea, thus contextually connecting Africa to the history of Spanish colonization. The importance of Latin America literature to the discipline of African Diaspora studies is immeasurable, and this edited collection provides a ripe cultural context for critical comparative ...

The Gospel According To José Saramago: A Comparative Study Of Critical Reception In Portugal, United States, And Canada, Bruna Reis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Portuguese writer José Saramago (1922-2010) is well-known for controversial, challenging, and thought-provoking novels. In this study, I analyze the critical reception of his works in his home country, where The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (1991) was excluded from participation in the European Literary Prize on ideological grounds, and in the United States and Canada, where Blindness (1995) brought a wave of uniformly positive response until the publication of Cain (2010), perceived negatively as a didactic tool to convince readers of the unviability of Christianity.

This examination is framed by Iser’s theory of aesthetic response. More specifically, I focus ...

O Oceano Por Onde Passa O Navio Negreiro, Diana M. Menasche

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

This thesis presents an in-depth reading of the poem “O Navio Negreiro,” written by Castro Alves. It analyzes the complex metaphors, narrative strategies and sound effects employed by ...

Gêneros Textuais E Práticas Discursivas Jurídicas: A Arquitetura De Uma Petição Inicial, Marcia Terezinha Jerônimo Oliveira Cruz

Marcia Terezinha Jerônimo Oliveira Cruz

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a Petição Inicial enquanto gênero textual.

Spice Race: The Island Princess And The Politics Of Transnational Appropriation, Carmen Nocentelli 2010 University of New Mexico

Spice Race: The Island Princess And The Politics Of Transnational Appropriation, Carmen Nocentelli

Carmen Nocentelli

Recent scholarship has located John Fletcher’s The Island Princess (1621) in the historical context of the early modern “spice race” but has not addressed the extent to which the intra-European tensions staged in the play also enact an international contest for symbolic and cultural resources. Taking as its starting point Fletcher’s acknowledged sources, Bartolomé Leonardo de Argensola’s Conquista de las islas Malucas (1609) and Louis Gédoyn de Bellan’s “Histoire memorable de Dias espagnol, et de Quixaire princesse de Moluques” (1615), this essay places The Island Princess in the thick of an appropriative process that moved from ...
