How To Attract African American College Students To Study Spanish: A Model For Virginia State University, Erika M. Neal

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Being culturally aware and able to communicate with people from different regions of the world is one of the most critical skills a student of color can obtain during their educational career. Not only will a student’s perspective of the world be altered, but their market value will skyrocket by 5-10% on average according to Forbes. Being bilingual or multilingual is a skill that can be applied to any career field in today’s society. Unfortunately, many African American students have had little to no exposure to foreign languages and cultures specifically Spanish. Even for those who have had ...

El Crimen Institucional, Hannah Anderson 2019 Pepperdine University

El Crimen Institucional, Hannah Anderson

Global Tides

From the beginning of human civilization, various levels of society have been clearly stratified. Larger, stronger groups, those with more resources and might, have been able to wield power over the alternate side of the spectrum. In modern society, we are able to see this through institutionalized crime. Through this research, the Chilean dictatorship in the late twentieth century will be analyzed from society’s literary and cinematic response. Through the film No directed by Pablo Larraín, and Ramón Díaz Eterovic’s novel La ciudad está triste, we can begin to understand the perspective of the institution through the lens ...

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker 2019 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker

Senior Theses

The Spanish wine scene is incredibly diverse, and an immense number of different wines are made in the country. Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier.

This thesis-guide was compiled ...

A Perception Study Of Rioplatense Spanish, Cecelia Staggs 2019 Boise State University

A Perception Study Of Rioplatense Spanish, Cecelia Staggs

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Rioplatense Spanish (RPS; Argentina and Uruguay) is known for its distinctive pronunciation features. In Standard American Spanish, the sound associated with the letters ‘y’ or ‘ll’ is [j] (as in ‘yellow’), but in RPS the sound is [ʒ] (as in ‘measure’) or, more recently, [ʃ] (as in ‘shoe’). Previous studies found this sound change (from [ʒ] to [ʃ]) is almost complete in speakers from Uruguay and Argentina, but the change in Uruguay is more recent. In this study, RPS speakers from both countries were presented with audio recordings of words containing all possible variants of the sounds [j], [ʒ], and ...

This study investigates the variability in the use of the Preterit canté (‘I sang’) and the Present Perfect he cantado (‘I have sung’) across three Spanish dialects: Peninsular (PEN), Peruvian (PER) and Argentinian (AR). The corpus has been obtained through online questionnaires, comprising a total of thirty-two exercises that evaluate the use of the two verb forms in the following contexts: continuative, relevance of present, life experience, prehodiernal context and without temporal adverbs. Teacher Beliefs About Focus On Form: Differences And Similarities Among Native And L2 Spanish Speakers, Bailey Morley

Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Although there has been research conducted around the beliefs of English as a foreign language teachers in regards to grammar, this research has not been extended to Spanish as a foreign language teachers. This study seeks to fill this gap in literature by identifying differences between native speakers (NS) and speakers of Spanish as a second language (L2) who are teachers of Spanish as a foreign language. Specifically, it aimed to investigate their differing beliefs toward grammar instruction. In this quantitative research study, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire, which included statements about grammar instruction in the classroom. Participants ...

Pilot Study Of Empathy In Adults, Libby Moberg 2019 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Pilot Study Of Empathy In Adults, Libby Moberg

Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Empathy is of critical public health importance due to its association with relationship satisfaction and well-being (Davis & Oathout, 1987; Davis, 1983). There is growing evidence that bilingual individuals may have higher levels of empathy (Javor, 2016). One potential mechanism for this relationship is that bilingual individuals tend to have higher levels of executive functioning (Costa et al, 2008), which is linked to higher empathy because individuals are able to more easily adopt others’ perspectives. Previous studies examining this question have largely relied on self-report questionnaires assessing empathy as a general tendency (i.e., trait). No studies have examined differences in the empathic ...
