About this Project

In the fall of 2018, 14 of the families and 32 students from two first-year seminars, Crossing Borders: Immigration, Identity, and Development and Immigrant Stories, worked together to create this cookbook. Families submitted their favorite dishes and then invited students to their homes to demonstrate the preparation. As they cooked and ate together, students recorded the steps to make the recipe and listened as connections between food, memory, family, migration, traditions, and religion emerged.

Harvesting Memory, Preserving Home: A Cookbook of the Painted Turtle Farm is the product of this undertaking. In it, we offer the collection ...

La Influencia Del Quechua En El Castellano De La Isla De Taquile / The Influence Of Quechua In The Castilian Of The Island Of Taquile, Gianna Macri

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Desasosiego En La Ciudad Neoliberal: Reflexiones En Torno A La Poesía Peruana Urbana Contemporánea, Ilka Kressner

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores the presentation of everyday urban spaces marked by neoliberal practices in a ...

Ansiedades Épico-Criollas Y El Mecenazgo De Indias En El Arauco Domado De Pedro De Oña, Andrea L. Fernandez 2018 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Ansiedades Épico-Criollas Y El Mecenazgo De Indias En El Arauco Domado De Pedro De Oña, Andrea L. Fernandez

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Among the characteristics of epic poetry are the topic of war, love encounters, heroism of exemplary individuals, and the narration of events contemporary to the audience to reinforce a collective historical identity. Arauco domado by Pedro de Oña, born in Angol (modern Chile), reiterates these traditional expectations with its protagonist, characters, setting, and latter theatrical representations within the viceregal context. The poem was made possible by the sponsorship of García Hurtado de Mendoza y Manrique, IV Marquis of Cañete and Viceroy of Peru. If the title of “espíritu cesarino novelo” [Caesar’s new spirit] (V.76.3) corresponds to the ...

Las Novelas De La Violencia Y La Revolución En La Formación Del Frente Nacional En Colombia Y El Estado Revolucionario Mexicano, Luis J. Henao Uribe 2018 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Las Novelas De La Violencia Y La Revolución En La Formación Del Frente Nacional En Colombia Y El Estado Revolucionario Mexicano, Luis J. Henao Uribe

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the face of the social and political crises that were both cause and consequence of the Mexican Revolution and the period in Colombia known as “la Violencia”, two state projects were consolidated and dominated the field of power throughout the 20th century. The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Mexico and the bipartisan coalition of the National Front in Colombia made use of the notions of revolution and violence, respectively, to legitimize their nation projects. This project investigates the role of the novel in the formation of these two new founding myths, from the urgent literary works that were written ...

Haunted Stories, Haunted Selves: Ghosts In Latin American Jewish Literature, Charlotte Gartenberg 2018 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Haunted Stories, Haunted Selves: Ghosts In Latin American Jewish Literature, Charlotte Gartenberg

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study approaches haunting in Latin American Jewish Literature from the 1990s through the 2010s as it appears in works by and featuring the descendants of Jewish immigrants. In these decades, this trope is frequently invoked as both a literary metaphor and a critical lens. It arises from and activates a number of themes common in trauma studies and in postmodernism, such as loss, the transmission of memory, our relationships to the past, the rupturing of traditional realities and questions of what can be known and represented. It is particularly prevalent amongst those who pen and protagonize the works examined ...

El Narcotráfico Como Realidad Y Representación En La Narrativa De Germán Castro Caycedo, Edgar Augusto Verastegui 2018 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

El Narcotráfico Como Realidad Y Representación En La Narrativa De Germán Castro Caycedo, Edgar Augusto Verastegui

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The work of the Colombian author Germán Castro Caycedo (Bogotá, 1944) has produced some of Colombia's most widely read non-fiction works during the last five decades. Among other intellectuals, his work represents a post-1970s Colombian society conditioned by the complex issue of drugs and drug trafficking, which were the by-products of a socio-historical process since the beginning of the 20th century. The present investigation examines journalistic articles, essays and non-fiction narrative by Castro Caycedo to study how they articulate a privileged knowledge about the perception and signification of the phenomenon of drug trafficking. From a merely anecdotal and marginal ...

Social Networks, Political Discourse And Polarization During The 2017 Catalan Elections, Rafael Monroig 2018 The University of Western Ontario

Social Networks, Political Discourse And Polarization During The 2017 Catalan Elections, Rafael Monroig

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis investigates the political process in Spain and Catalonia during the Catalan election in December 2017. This regional election was unusual because of the independence process in Catalonia and its repression. Two parties, Ciudadanos (anti-independence) and Podemos (ambiguous position) and their leaders’ activity in Twitter was analyzed. It was explored from three perspectives: social networks, lexical and emotional discourse and ideological polarization. Firstly, social networks were used to see the properties of the support communities of both parties. Interestingly unlike Ps, Ciudadanos’ (Cs) metrics of cohesion showed that political communities of this party in Spain and Catalonia were remarkably ...

“María Llena Eres De Gracia” Y Una Desconocida: La Fortaleza Del Espíritu Humano, Yaakov Oliveira

Best Integrated Writing

The compassion for, and understanding of, The Other, without bias, is the most revealing attribute of this paper. Given that immigration, and undocumented people constantly coming to the US, has become a national issue, it is inspiring to see that there still are ways of evaluating the problematic--with objectivity--yet with admiration. This writer is capable of seeing with the inner eyes, perceiving the colloquialisms of the Spanish language, the traits of the culture, and the emotion of both narratives that he is comparing. At the end of the day, film and art remain as the bridge between cultures.

Intolerancia En Tiempos De Crisis: Hacia Una Literatura Transgresora En El Sitio De Los Sitios De Juan Goytisolo, Oscar Ivan Useche 2018 Ursinus College

Intolerancia En Tiempos De Crisis: Hacia Una Literatura Transgresora En El Sitio De Los Sitios De Juan Goytisolo, Oscar Ivan Useche

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

This paper proposes ...

Paulo Coelho: Transnational Literature, Popular Culture, And Postmodernism, Anna Pavlova Murta 2018 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Paulo Coelho: Transnational Literature, Popular Culture, And Postmodernism, Anna Pavlova Murta

Theses and Dissertations

With over 350 million books sold worldwide in more than 80 languages, Paulo Coelho is an international literary phenomenon that moves “beyond culture of origin” (Damrosch 199) and inhabits the “world literary space” (Pascale 281). Would his novels, therefore, stand as materialization of Goethe’s humanist cosmopolitan vision upon the coinage of the term world literature? Many cultural scholars would argue to the contrary. This dissertation aims at exploring Coelho narratives and their popularity and controversial reception by contextualizing them within the contemporary scholarship on World Literature and within the global cultural economy.

An underlying assumption of this Cultural Studies ...

Addressing Diversity And Difference In Contemporary Spanish Lesbian Literature: Reading Illy Nes’S El Lago Rosa And Cristina Cuesta’S “Zoe Y Haydee”, Megan Sheldon 2018 University of Kansas

Addressing Diversity And Difference In Contemporary Spanish Lesbian Literature: Reading Illy Nes’S El Lago Rosa And Cristina Cuesta’S “Zoe Y Haydee”, Megan Sheldon

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Illy Nes’s novel El lago rosa (The Pink Lake, 2004) and Cristina Cuesta’s short story “Zoe y Haydee” (Zoe and Haydee, 2007) depict travel and cross-cultural queer relationships that call attention to racial and class differences as well as ethnic and cultural divides. Both narratives raise questions concerning the representation of queer women of color in Spanish fiction of the new millennium. This article focuses on the diverse cultural, political and personal struggles that surround the formation and negotiation of sexual identity, emphasizing the fact that LGBTQ identity is not necessarily cross-culturally or universally constructed around identical interests ...

The works analyzed are How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991) by Dominican author Julia Alvarez, Dreaming in Cuban (1992) by Cuban-American novelist Cristina García, and the memoir Almost a Woman (1998) by Puerto Rican author Esmeralda Santiago. The theoretical framework used is Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza.
