Pilot Study Of Empathy In Bilingual Adults, Libby Moberg 2019 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Pilot Study Of Empathy In Bilingual Adults, Libby Moberg

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Empathy is of critical public health importance due to its association with relationship satisfaction and well-being (Davis & Oathout, 1987; Davis, 1983). There is growing evidence that bilingual individuals may have higher levels of empathy (Javor, 2016). One potential mechanism for this relationship is that bilingual individuals tend to have higher levels of executive functioning (Costa et al, 2008), which is linked to higher empathy because individuals are able to more easily adopt others’ perspectives. Previous studies examining this question have largely relied on self-report questionnaires assessing empathy as a general tendency (i.e., trait). No studies have examined differences in the empathic ...

Reading The Readers : Analyses Of Shakespearean And Cervantine Characters As (Dys)Functional Readers., Erin Shannon O'Reilly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes how the protagonists of Don Quixote and The Tempest perform the act of reading. It explores how the authors create interpretive communities within their works and bring them into conflict in order to foreground the dysfunctionality of particular types of reading. While functional readers are capable of reading among and beyond diverse interpretive communities, dysfunctional readers operate within a single community to the exclusion of other possible interpretations. Chapter One examines Cervantes’s creation of multiple interpretive communities within the first six chapters of Don Quixote, and how Don Quixote acts as dysfunctional reader through his inability ...

Una enunciación intersticial: la poética del destierro de Carlos de Rokha

The era of the Chilean vanguard, in early twentieth century, is currently experiencing a resurgence of interest and study. In particular, the popular uprisings of 1938 and significant advancement of women in cultural and social terms are pivotal, yet it was also the stage of state-sanctioned repression and violence, and in the ensuing decades, persecution of activists and marginalized individuals. My study of the work of the surrealist poet, Carlos de Rokha (1920-1962), highlights the close relationship in the creation of the literary canon with the definition of a ...

Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the discourses and experiences of cultural work as a form of intellectual and artistic solidarity in Peru during the 1960s and 1970s. Amid the broader Latin American and global spirit of revolution, anti-imperialism and Third World liberation, in Peru these decades saw a radical transformation in society where rural and urban masses rose against a traditional political and socioeconomic system that maintained colonial structures of domination and oppression of marginalized populations. In an attempt to rein in this desborde popular, as it became known, the nationalist and populist Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces and a consolidating ...

Vocalización O Desconsonantización, Orlando Alba 2019 Brigham Young University - Provo

Vocalización O Desconsonantización, Orlando Alba

Faculty Publications

Revitalización Económica: The Change Of Chilean Economic Principles In The 1970s, Xander Piedra

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

Socio-economic policy reforms of the 1970s had a profound impact on Chilean society. These reforms were highly controversial and sharply debated both nationally and internationally. My project investigates the impact of foreign interventions on Chile’s economy and society. These interventions resulted in a rise in economic activity and, at the same time, produced substantial social unrest. Despite social instability and human rights violations, these economic interventions forged the framework for a stable economic future. At the center of these economic reforms stood the “Chicago Boys” and their program for economic development known as El Ladrillo. The plan was implemented ...

Providing Social Services To Latino Immigrants - A Theological Perspective, Olivia Mahon 2019 Carroll College

Providing Social Services To Latino Immigrants - A Theological Perspective, Olivia Mahon

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

Each year, thousands of people immigrate to the United States, and many are from various Latin American countries. The motivation for leaving their home is a result of economic burdens, violence, corruption and much more. For many, the experience of immigration is one filled with challenges and dire circumstances. Many families arrive in the United States with nothing. These communities are in need of support, often provided by social workers. However the diverse backgrounds and the extensive set of challenges these people face hinder social workers’ abilities to provide the necessary services. The present research looks at the approach of ...

Perception Or Reality? U.S. Portrayals Of Latino Immigrants Versus Latino Immigrant Literature, Mariah Swenson 2019 Carroll College

Perception Or Reality? U.S. Portrayals Of Latino Immigrants Versus Latino Immigrant Literature, Mariah Swenson

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

The United States and Latin America share about a 1,954 mile long border, and the U.S. is home to millions of Latino immigrants, the descendants of Latino immigrants and Latinos who have watched the border move around them. The primary discourse around Latinos living in the United States is typically created by non-Latinos, and this one-sided discussion has created a certain perspective, and often a critical prejudice, toward multiple generations of Latinos. This research presentation will explore the juxtaposition of socio-cultural identities constructed by Latinos about themselves and those identities constructed for them by others.

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)
