La Vida De Lazarillo De Tormes Y De Sus Fortunas Y Adversidades, Chad M. Gasta

Chad M. Gasta

La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades is considered the world’s first picaresque novel and its prototype. Published in 1554 concurrently in Spain and Antwerp by an unknown author, the book tells the story of Lazarillo, an orphaned boy who becomes an apprentice to a series of masters, each of whom train him in the ways of the world. As the adult narrator, Lázaro explains how through cunning, deception, and wit, he has been able to overcome his ignoble birth to ascend socially and prosper materially. But in the process of reading his story ...

The Mysterious Task Of Translating The Names Of Mystery Subgenres: A Private Eye Investigation, Enrique Torner 2019 Minnesota State University, Mankato

The Mysterious Task Of Translating The Names Of Mystery Subgenres: A Private Eye Investigation, Enrique Torner

Enrique Torner, Ph.D.

How would you translate into English the Spanish term “novela negra”? How about “novela policíaca”? If you don’t know much Spanish (or even if you do), you probably guessed that the first term must mean “black novel”, and the second one “police procedural (novel)”, if you are acquainted with this genre. Did you? Let’s try translating from English into Spanish: How would you translate “hard-boiled” novels? How about “soft-boiled”? I don’t know about you, but, to a native Spanish-speaker like me, it sounds like you are talking about eggs! Believe it or not, a “hard-boiled” novel is ...

An Analysis Of The Discourse Of Advanced Low And Advanced Mid Speakers Of Spanish When Talking About The Past, Enrique Torner

Enrique Torner, Ph.D.

The main goals of this study are: 1) to elaborate and draw comparisons between the discourse features of speakers at each sub-level, and between heritage and non-heritage speakers; 2) to compare the resulting conclusions with the level description of the Guidelines; 3) to contribute to the process of either validating or offering suggestions for the improvement of the descriptors included that pertain to the act of narrating and describing the past, which is so fundamental to proficiency at these two levels; and 4) to provide some extra insight into the process of learning how to talk about the past.

El Teatro Antimodernista Español: Máter Dolorosa (1904) De Leopoldo Cano Y El Tenorio Modernista (1906) De Pablo Parellada, Enrique Torner 2019 Minnesota State University, Mankato

El Teatro Antimodernista Español: Máter Dolorosa (1904) De Leopoldo Cano Y El Tenorio Modernista (1906) De Pablo Parellada, Enrique Torner

Enrique Torner, Ph.D.

This article analyzes and compares two plays that have received little attention by scholars: Máter dolorosa (1904), by Leopoldo Cano, and El Tenorio modernista (1906,) by Pablo Parellada. These plays are a parody of the modernist style that dominated Spanish and Spanish American literature from 1888 -when it was started by the publication of Azul, a compilation of poems and stories written by Rubén Darío- to 1920 or so. This study shows how each author ridiculed and satirized modernism, the way in which their plays are a model of a parody, how they achieve a unique sense of humor, and ...

Propuestas Para (Re)Construir Una Nación : El Teatro De Emilia Pardo Bazán, Margot Versteeg 2019 Purdue University

Propuestas Para (Re)Construir Una Nación : El Teatro De Emilia Pardo Bazán, Margot Versteeg

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Propuestas para (re)construir una nación explores how Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921) imagines and engenders the Spanish nation in her theatrical production staged and/or published between 1898 and 1909. In the aftermath of Spain’s colonial losses, when Spain’s male authors, in a growing mood of collective introspection, directed their attention to the homeland, Pardo Bazán generated a series of theatrical proposals to revitalize the nation. In her plays, she manifests her ideas about Spain’s fin de siècle crisis, reflects on Spain’s place in the international arena (emphasizing the nation’s civilizing mission), critiques the ...

The Historical And Materialist Subtext Of The Battle Of The Sheep, Chad M. Gasta 2019 Iowa State University

The Historical And Materialist Subtext Of The Battle Of The Sheep, Chad M. Gasta

Chad M. Gasta

In his perceptive work on the interrelationship between history and literature, Louis Montrose advocates a resituation of texts within their contexts which leads to "a reciprocal concern with the historicity of texts and the textuality of history" (20). For Montrose, aesthetic works can historicize the past and provide an understanding and explanation of times past, even though they cannot provide an objective portrayal of history (20). It is in this spirit that i would like to approach the Battle of the Sheep in Don Quijote. To resituate this well-known episode within its socio-historical context is to make possible a more ...

Assessing L2 Listening In Call And Listening Strategy Use, Cristina Pardo-Ballester

Cristina Pardo-Ballester

This longitudinal study examines students’ learning strategies of 222 Spanish intermediate learners when taking several listening tests. It also examines the effect of different instructional formats (online-hybrid vs. face2face-blended) on the learners’ strategy use. There were four versions of the same text: an audio format, a video format, a redundancy-enhanced version in audio format, and a redundancy-enhanced version in video format. A pseudo-cross over design was utilized for this study with four listening tests used with each group. Participants completed a questionnaire immediately after each listening test to learn about learners’ strategies before, during and after listening in order to ...

La Expresion De La Posesion Nominal En Medellin, Colombia, Matthew Freeman 2019 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

La Expresion De La Posesion Nominal En Medellin, Colombia, Matthew Freeman

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis constitutes a sociolinguistic variationist investigation on the expression of nominal possession in the dialect of Spanish in Medellín, Colombia. The following three variants are investigated which represent different ways of expressing the variable: possessive adjectives, definite articles and possessive periphrases. Furthermore, results are compared from the dialect spoken in Medellín with results from Orozco 2018 of the Colombian costeño dialect. The results are analyzed through the programs R and Language Variation Suite. La distribution of the variants and linguistic and social predictors that condition the expression of possession are compared among the two cities. The results indicate that ...

Mi Semestre Con La Experiencia Inmigrante: Todos Podríamos Aprender Un Poco, Rachel C. Ziemba 2019 University of Richmond

Mi Semestre Con La Experiencia Inmigrante: Todos Podríamos Aprender Un Poco, Rachel C. Ziemba

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study examines the continuities and ruptures in the representations of the indigenous peoples of the Andes depicted in the discourse of selected texts of the Conquest of America, the Colonial Era, the nation-state, and in the indigenous narratives. The first chapter explains the concept of representation and explores different approaches to the identity of the indigenous peoples from the perspective of the Other and from the indigenous voices themselves. Based on the theoretical contributions that relate history and genealogy with literature, I propose a discursive analysis that aids in articulating the genealogy of tropes, which are contained in the ...

El Jardí Dels Set Crepuscles, La Intelectualización De La Ficción Especulativa En La Literatura Catalana De Los Años Ochenta, Miguel A. Albújar Escuredo

Abstract: This essay illustrates how Miquel de Palol, with the publication of the Jardí dels set crepuscles (1989), culminates the evolution of the ...

Undying (And Undead) Modern National Myths: Cannibalism And Racial Mixture In Contemporary Brazilian Vampire Fiction, Jacob C. Brown 2019 Vanderbilt University

Undying (And Undead) Modern National Myths: Cannibalism And Racial Mixture In Contemporary Brazilian Vampire Fiction, Jacob C. Brown

Alambique: Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasia / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

Contemporary cultural media illustrates the vampire as an important symbolic figure in the Brazilian imaginary. For example, in twentieth and twenty-first century Brazilian fiction, television, and political discourse, vampires have risen from their supposedly European origins as expressions of urban decay, comic excess, and government corruption in Brazil. Beyond these representations, I focus on three contemporary novels in which the vampire also plays a starring role. O vampiro que descobriu o Brasil (1999) by Ivan Jaf, Aventuras do vampiro de Palmares (2014) by Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro, and Dom Pedro I Vampiro (2015) by Nazarethe Fonseca stand out from other creative reimaginings ...
