A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

How To Attract African American College Students To Study Spanish: A Model For Virginia State University, Erika M. Neal

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Being culturally aware and able to communicate with people from different regions of the world is one of the most critical skills a student of color can obtain during their educational career. Not only will a student’s perspective of the world be altered, but their market value will skyrocket by 5-10% on average according to Forbes. Being bilingual or multilingual is a skill that can be applied to any career field in today’s society. Unfortunately, many African American students have had little to no exposure to foreign languages and cultures specifically Spanish. Even for those who have had ...

El Crimen Institucional, Hannah Anderson 2019 Pepperdine University

El Crimen Institucional, Hannah Anderson

Global Tides

From the beginning of human civilization, various levels of society have been clearly stratified. Larger, stronger groups, those with more resources and might, have been able to wield power over the alternate side of the spectrum. In modern society, we are able to see this through institutionalized crime. Through this research, the Chilean dictatorship in the late twentieth century will be analyzed from society’s literary and cinematic response. Through the film No directed by Pablo Larraín, and Ramón Díaz Eterovic’s novel La ciudad está triste, we can begin to understand the perspective of the institution through the lens ...

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker 2019 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker

Senior Theses

The Spanish wine scene is incredibly diverse, and an immense number of different wines are made in the country. Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier.

This thesis-guide was compiled ...

Teacher Beliefs About Focus On Form: Differences And Similarities Among Native And L2 Spanish Speakers, Bailey Morley

Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Although there has been research conducted around the beliefs of English as a foreign language teachers in regards to grammar, this research has not been extended to Spanish as a foreign language teachers. This study seeks to fill this gap in literature by identifying differences between native speakers (NS) and speakers of Spanish as a second language (L2) who are teachers of Spanish as a foreign language. Specifically, it aimed to investigate their differing beliefs toward grammar instruction. In this quantitative research study, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire, which included statements about grammar instruction in the classroom. Participants ...

Pilot Study Of Empathy In Adults, Libby Moberg 2019 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Pilot Study Of Empathy In Adults, Libby Moberg

Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Empathy is of critical public health importance due to its association with relationship satisfaction and well-being (Davis & Oathout, 1987; Davis, 1983). There is growing evidence that bilingual individuals may have higher levels of empathy (Javor, 2016). One potential mechanism for this relationship is that bilingual individuals tend to have higher levels of executive functioning (Costa et al, 2008), which is linked to higher empathy because individuals are able to more easily adopt others’ perspectives. Previous studies examining this question have largely relied on self-report questionnaires assessing empathy as a general tendency (i.e., trait). No studies have examined differences in the empathic ...

Review Of Daring To Write: Contemporary Narratives By Dominican Women, Megan Jeanette Myers 2019 Iowa State University

Review Of Daring To Write: Contemporary Narratives By Dominican Women, Megan Jeanette Myers

Megan Jeanette Myers

Numerous anthologies of Caribbean writers—and, more specifically, anthologies of Caribbean women writers—have been published in the last 20 years. Border Crossings: A Trilingual Anthology of Caribbean Women Writers (2011) and Stories from Blue Latitudes: Caribbean Women Writers at Home and Abroad (2005) represent two similarly curated anthologies that complement earlier volumes compiling the works of Caribbean and women writers. With the recent publication of Daring to Write, editor Erika M. Martínez focuses readers’ attention on a specific, often neglected, subset of Caribbean women writers: Dominicans. Martínez intentionally places little-known works of newcomers alongside fiction and nonfiction written by ...
