Un Film Sentimental Para Tus Ojos: El Cinematógrafo En La Poesía Ultraísta De Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Vera Ruth Jones

Undergraduate Theses and Professional Papers

Lucía Sánchez Saornil was the only woman poet who participated in Ultraism, a Spanish Avant-Garde movement of the 1920s that implemented constant thematic and formal experimentation in search of a new language capable of representing modernity and technology. This Spanish-language paper focuses on the impact of cinematography on the Ultraist poetry of Sánchez Saornil. By analyzing two of her poems, "Cines" (1921) and "Domingo" (date unknown), I explain how she utilizes cinematography to 1) to express her experience of modernity and 2) to articulate her relationship with her poetry and the reader. The analysis of these texts and the role ...

The Picaresque According To Cervantes, Chad M. Gasta 2010 Iowa State University

The Picaresque According To Cervantes, Chad M. Gasta

World Languages and Cultures Publications

There is an unfortunate and enduring belief among non-Hispanist scholars that Miguel de Cervantes was a writer of the picaresque and that his most famous protagonist, Don Quixote, is a picaresque (anti)hero. This misjudgment, mostly outside Spain, has historical roots, starting with Cervantes' own contemporaries, and has lasted to the present. The misunderstanding stems firstly from the fact that many scholars are unfamiliar with the Spanish picaresque. This is confounded by the fact that Cervantes did indeed integrate numerous features of the Spanish picaresque into several of his works, especially Don Quixote and his Exemplary Novels. However, this problem ...

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’S Decolonizing Ritual De Conocimiento, Sarah S. Ohmer 2010 CUNY Lehman College

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’S Decolonizing Ritual De Conocimiento, Sarah S. Ohmer

Publications and Research

Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s work makes up one of the many Chican@ works that contribute another history, a history repressed by the national discourses on both sides of the border. Influenced by antecedents of U.S. Hispanic Literature who superposed “official” history with another history, Chicano activists had already enacted a retrieval of pre-conquest histories to revive their people’s historical consciousness. As Saldívar-Hull states in “Mestiza Consciousness and Politics: Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/ La frontera,” the publication of Borderlands/ La Frontera distinguished itself from the Chicano movement’s as it unveiled the curtain that hid the Aztec goddesses and ...

Chile: Mi Conquista, De Norte A Sur, Grace Cowan

CMC Senior Theses

My thesis is a creative expression in poetry about my study abroad experience in Chile. During my time in Chile I traveled all over the country and tried to experience as much of the culture as possible. These poems speak of different parts of the country that I visited and different cultural aspects to which I was exposed. The work also includes photos from my travels to accompany several of my poems. This thesis was written with the hope that others might be able to better understand my semester in Chile.

Cross-Dressing And Lesbian Representation In Belle Époque By Fernando Trueba, Nuria Cruz-Camara 2009 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Cross-Dressing And Lesbian Representation In Belle Époque By Fernando Trueba, Nuria Cruz-Camara

Nuria Cruz-Camara

"The Oscar-winning film Belle Époque (1992), directed by Fernando Trueba, systematically deconstructs patriarchal forms of masculinities by mocking the “Iberian macho” stereotype, by representing actively desiring women, and by allegedly making the male protagonist the object of the female gaze. The inversion of traditional gender roles throughout the film reaches its peak at the carnival cross-dressing sequence, when Violeta, dressed as a male soldier, aggressively seduces Fernando, dressed as a maid, and maintains total control over the love-making process. However, as I will demonstrate in this article, this seemingly subversive reversal of sexual identities is superficial and, in fact, reinstates ...
