Analyzing Gm Food Risk Arguments Through An Online, Multi-Media Case Study, Tosh Tachino, David R. Russell

David Russell

We constructed an online, multi-media simulation of an environmental debate, and analyzed the uses of scientific information from it that 41 college students included in arguments about the issue. Analysis of the ways students appropriate information to reason about science suggests they do so much as scientists do in public policy debates.

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Opening Statements In Trial: Reconsidering The Classical Canon Of Invention, Andrew Chandler 2019 Bellarmine University

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Opening Statements In Trial: Reconsidering The Classical Canon Of Invention, Andrew Chandler

Undergraduate Theses

This analysis of 21 opening statements probes at current persuasive practices employed by trial attorneys through the lens of mainstream legal advice and an expanded definition of rhetorical invention – one which includes both discovery and creation. An evaluation of such practice reveals the utility, and furthermore the duty of the advocate, to draw upon an expanded realm of available arguments.

When Process Becomes Processing: Managing Instructor Response To Student Disclosure Of Trauma In The Composition Classroom, Kelci Barton 2019 East Tennessee State University

When Process Becomes Processing: Managing Instructor Response To Student Disclosure Of Trauma In The Composition Classroom, Kelci Barton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In first-year composition courses, there are three aspects of teaching that are researched well so far: disclosure of trauma in student writing, instructor feedback, and emotional labor. The disclosure of trauma is almost completely unavoidable in first-year composition. We encounter an issue with instructor feedback; how do we provide feedback to student writing, like grammar and mechanics, when the student has disclosed trauma in the writing? Additionally, we can build off this with emotional labor, which already occurs consistently in teaching but is heightened in this instance. When providing feedback to a student who has disclosed trauma, this can be ...

The Poetic Function Of Imagination: The Parallel Process Of Poiêsis, Angela Carlson 2019 Lesley University

The Poetic Function Of Imagination: The Parallel Process Of Poiêsis, Angela Carlson

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

In the advent of Postmodernism, modern approaches to understanding the nature of things is being put into question. As the gap between objective and subjective realms of experiences is narrowing, there is an increased need for a more artful approach to science. This paper serves as my attempt to promote the field of Expressive Arts Therapy (ExATh) as a mode of poetic science for understanding the experience of ‘Being’ in the world. Through a critical review of the semantic development of the ancient Greek concepts poiêsis, noêsis, and aisthêsis, the imagination is identified as a function of alêthaic revealing, personified ...

“Thanks To ‘X’ For Beta-Ing!”: Fan Fiction Beta Readers In The Writing Center, Regan Levitte 2019 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

“Thanks To ‘X’ For Beta-Ing!”: Fan Fiction Beta Readers In The Writing Center, Regan Levitte

Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research: Department of English

In this thesis, I pose the question: what can we learn from fan fiction beta reading practices that can be applied to the writing center? Through interviews of writing center consultants who have had beta reading experiences, I consider what collaborative practices they have transferred into their writing center consultant skill sets. This project records how their affinity groups supported their literacy habits, and which dynamics of power and embodiment meant the most to them in these two discourse communities.

Combining historic texts on what ideal writing center pedagogy looks like, I explore how writers could interact with acknowledgement of ...

Using Delphi To Track Shifts In Meanings Of Scientific Concepts In A Long-Term, Expert-Lay Collaboration On Sustainable Agriculture Research In The Midwest, Nancy Grudens-Schuck, G. L. Drake Larsen 2019 Iowa State University

Using Delphi To Track Shifts In Meanings Of Scientific Concepts In A Long-Term, Expert-Lay Collaboration On Sustainable Agriculture Research In The Midwest, Nancy Grudens-Schuck, G. L. Drake Larsen

Nancy Grudens-Schuck

Dilemmas for ongoing expert-lay collaborations for agricultural conservation include divergence of meaning of new scientific concepts. Delphi method documented stakeholders’ understandings of a new term, “ecosystem services.” Flood mitigation and pest management benefits as ecosystem service attributes were ranked lower by stakeholders than anticipated by scientists. Recreation and aesthetics, and food production, were ranked higher.

Rhetoric At The University Of Chicago, James Beasley 2019 University of North Florida

Rhetoric At The University Of Chicago, James Beasley

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

From the early 1940's through the 1960's, some of the most important articles in rhetoric and composition were written by University of Chicago faculty, and it was these articles that became the touchstones of rhetorical education in the institutional return to rhetoric in the latter half of the twentieth century. By organizing these articles according to their institutional context, my book, Rhetoric at the University of Chicago, sheds new light on the beginnings of rhetoric and composition and demonstrates the significance of historical context in avoiding the misuse of these articles as foundationalist rhetorical theory.

Yellow Fever: Asian Representation In Western Pornography, Chye Shoong Chin

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This research project seeks to explore the various implications porn films make on Asians Orientalism. Generally, Asians in pornography are composed of multiple negative archetypes, all based on the underlining purpose of servitude. Characters are portrayed through stereotypes including the use of colonial language to misrepresent Asian men and women in both straight and gay porn videos. Referred to as Orientalism, this ideology exploits Asian characters to privilege the White, male viewer. My research project investigates the following question: How are Asians represented in gay and straight pornographic films and pornographic scenes?

I will be applying scholarly arguments to various ...

Estudio Contrastivo Intercultural De Las Funciones Retóricas De Las Citas: La Producción De Textos Académicos En El Nivel De Posgrado Escritos En Español E Inglés, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

The main objective of this research is to discover which rhetorical functions were used in the Master´s thesis writing written by eight (8) American and eight (8) Spanish postgraduates in their na-tive language. A computerized tex-tual analysis of the rhetorical func-tion of citation was used to study this phenomenon (Petrić, 2007). The results obtained from the re-search showed that the different cultural conventions in the thesis writing indicate that when com-pared with native Spanish writers, the American writers of English use the highest number of cita-tions, and write a relatively longer Introduction and Conclusion parts. On the other hand ...

Aproximación Didáctica Al Apendizaje De Las Funciones Retóricas De Las Citas En El Discurso Académico Universitario, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

10 - Embodied Composition Pedagogy, Amanda Ayers

Georgia Undergraduate Research Conference (GURC)

This study evaluates the relevance and effectiveness of embodied composition pedagogies. The current literature argues the benefit of incorporating the body into the classroom, especially for racially marginalized students. Through literary analysis, three indicators of embodied pedagogy were identified: 1) discussion based learning, 2) multimodality, and 3) process oriented writing assessments. The methods for implementing embodied pedagogy can be identified by these indicators and evaluated for effectiveness. In spring 2019, I will begin the second phase of my research which will analyze applied embodied pedagogy in composition 1101 and 1102 classrooms. Through student surveys and professor interviews, the effectiveness of ...

Women In The New Testament’S Church Ministry: The Problem Of Remaining Silent, Jose A. Santiago 2018 Liberty University

Women In The New Testament’S Church Ministry: The Problem Of Remaining Silent, Jose A. Santiago

Diligence: Journal of the Liberty University Online Religion Capstone in Research and Scholarship

In 1 Corinthians 14:34, one finds Paul’ command that women ought to keep silent in the church setting. As a result, this command appears to be a subject of great debate for many since the text seems to contradict Scripture’ view of women’s involvement in ministry. In addition, it seems to contradict the fact that Paul has just previously mentioned women prophesying (1 Corinthians 11:5). Hence, it creates a problem designating this verse to be un-Pauline in nature, either by interpolation or allusive quotation. Subsequently, this begs for further investigation of Paul’s prohibition of a woman ...
