Book Review: Daniel M. Bell, Jr., Just War As Christian Discipleship: Recentering The Tradition In The Church Rather Than The State, Brian Stiltner 2010 Sacred Heart University

Book Review: Daniel M. Bell, Jr., Just War As Christian Discipleship: Recentering The Tradition In The Church Rather Than The State, Brian Stiltner

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

From his conversations in church settings and classrooms, Daniel M. Bell, Jr. has observed that Christians by and large do not know the church’s just war tradition very well, but that they are receptive to learning about it. Most theologians would likely agree that they know a number of Christians who are hungry to see better thinking and more effective action in response to war in our time. Bell, a Lutheran seminary professor and ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, wrote this book to interpret ‘the just war tradition in terms of concrete practices that might contribute to ...

Assessing A Literary Legacy: The Case Of John Mcgahern, Eamon Maher

Articles

Since he passed away in 2006, John McGahern’s status as Ireland’s foremost prose writer in English has been reinforced by the establishment of an International Seminar and Summer School byNUIGalway and a Yearbook that captures the highlights of this event. Enhanced by wonderfully expressive photographic material and the adroit editorial skills of John Kenny, the second volume of the Yearbook has an impressive array of contributors, including Denis Sampson, probably the leading expert on McGahern’s work, David Malcolm, whose Understanding John McGahern was published in 2007, Gearo´id O ´ Tuathaigh, and Christopher Murray.

Mobilizing New Members To Pursue Discipleship Through Ministry, L. Nelson Bell II 2010 Fuller Theological Seminary

Mobilizing New Members To Pursue Discipleship Through Ministry, L. Nelson Bell Ii

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Highland Park Presbyterian Church is a large congregation in Dallas, Texas. Its mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. However, the church lacks a plan to mobilize new members into ministry where they can be fruitful and experience transformation. The discipleship strategy will train mentors to assist new members in taking their next step in discipleship through spiritual disciplines and ministry.

This paper contains three sections. The first section profiles the surrounding communities and the relationship that culture has upon the congregation. Recent traumatic history has shaped its demeanor, and the socioeconomic success of the community influences the mindset ...

A Strategy For Redeveloping And Revitalizing Houston Presbyterian Cursillo, Kristin M. Huffman 2010 Fuller Theological Seminary

A Strategy For Redeveloping And Revitalizing Houston Presbyterian Cursillo, Kristin M. Huffman

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Since 1997, Houston Presbyterian Cursillo (HPC) has been a beautiful and effective tool that God has used to help transform many people’s lives. However, in the past few years, HPC has begun to show signs of decline and waning interest. The goal of this ministry focus paper is to explore and enhance the effectiveness of Houston Presbyterian Cursillo in order to increase the lasting transformation of participants as evidenced by personal spiritual growth and missional servanthood. My hope is to help HPC begin the process of redevelopment and revitalization.

This paper contains three major sections. The first section tells ...

Hermann Cohen, Maimonides, And The Jewish Virtue Of Humility, Robert Erlewine 2010 Illinois Wesleyan University

Hermann Cohen, Maimonides, And The Jewish Virtue Of Humility, Robert Erlewine

Robert Erlewine

This paper explores Hermann Cohen’s engagement with, and appropriation of, Maimonides to refute the common assumption that Cohen’s endeavor was to harmonize Judaism with Western culture. Exploring the changes of Cohen’s conception of humility from Ethik des reinen Willens to the Ethics of Maimonides and Religion of Reason out of the Sources of Judaism, this paper highlights the centrality of the collective Jewish mission to bear witness against the dominant order of Western civilization and philosophy in Cohen’s Jewish thought. This article was published as part of a special issue of the Journal of Jewish Thought ...

Spiritually Integrative Archetypal Energies And Glimpes Into Soul Consciousness, carroy u. ferguson 2010 UMASS Boston

Spiritually Integrative Archetypal Energies And Glimpes Into Soul Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

In other writings I have described Archetypal Energies as Higher Vibrational Energies that have their own transcendent value, purpose, quality, and “voice” unique to the individual that operate deep within our psyches, at both individual and collective levels. We tend to experience them as “creative urges” to move us toward our Highest Good or Optimal Realities. I use easily recognized terms to evoke a common sense of these Archetypal Energies (e.g., Love, Acceptance, Inclusion, Harmony, Peace). Here, I want to discuss Spiritually Integrative Archetypal Energies and how they can assist us in gaining glimpses into the nature of our ...

A Historical Analysis Of How Preach My Gospel Came To Be, Benjamin H. White 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo

A Historical Analysis Of How Preach My Gospel Came To Be, Benjamin H. White

Theses and Dissertations

Missionary work is one of the most important tasks undertaken by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Spreading the gospel is at the heart of the Savior's message to his apostles shortly before his ascension into heaven, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost," (Matt. 28:19). Full time missionaries of the Church are charged with teaching Christ's message. The questions of what to teach and how to teach it have led to four sets of formal missionary discussions ...
