Negative Harmony: Experiments With The Polarity In Music, Michael Brister 2019 East Tennessee State University

Negative Harmony: Experiments With The Polarity In Music, Michael Brister

Undergraduate Honors Theses

I set out to experiment and justify the use of a new theory called Negative Harmony in 21st century music. Negative Harmony is a musical avenue from which composers can glean new tones within traditional music theory rules. I took inspiration from the current leading authority on the topic, Jacob Collier, as well as older scholars from the 20th century, such as Ernst Levy and George Rochberg. I conducted research on the theory by finding its relation to major and minor chords, and how these mirrored chords worked from a theory standpoint. I then composed two original works ...

An Analysis Of Pants Roles In Opera, Jonna Pickard 2019 East Tennessee State University

An Analysis Of Pants Roles In Opera, Jonna Pickard

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This document assesses the introduction of pants roles in opera and includes a historical overview to understand the background of these roles. This dramatic conceit concentrates on the development of the operatic art form from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries. In Italy during the seventeenth century, the castrato voice, which had been a crucial aspect of church music, was now developing a position in opera. Within this document, the castrati’s transition from sacred music to the opera, where lies the bulk of their success, will be studied. As opera expands rapidly throughout the music scene, the demand of singers ...

This dissertation explores the specificities of the French piano school between 1920 and 1940, a defining time in the history of French pianism. This research focuses on the musical and technical traditions established at the Conservatoire de Paris and provides a comparative analysis of the pedagogy and musical aesthetics of three influential French artist-teachers of the twentieth century: Marguerite Long, Isidor Philipp, and Lazare-Lévy.

Early Twentieth Century Vocal Performance Practice And The French School: An Exploration Of The Lectures And Selected Songs By Reynaldo Hahn, Mary P. Hubbell

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Composer, conductor, singer, and critic Reynaldo Hahn (1874–1947) was a highly influential figure in Paris’s artistic circles during the first half of the twentieth century. Today he is primarily remembered as a composer of art song. However, during his lifetime he was also admired as a sophisticated composer of operetta and chamber music, and his keen intellect and attention to detail also made him a discerning music critic and arbiter of taste. In 1913, he was invited to present a series of five lectures on the art of singing to the “Université des Annales.” This organization produced presentations ...

Taking Notes: Generating Twelve-Tone Music With Mathematics, Nathan Molder 2019 East Tennessee State University

Taking Notes: Generating Twelve-Tone Music With Mathematics, Nathan Molder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has often been a connection between music and mathematics. The world of musical composition is full of combinations of orderings of different musical notes, each of which has different sound quality, length, and em phasis. One of the more intricate composition styles is twelve-tone music, where twelve unique notes (up to octave isomorphism) must be used before they can be repeated. In this thesis, we aim to show multiple ways in which mathematics can be used directly to compose twelve-tone musical scores.

Stressful Music: A Look Into The Challenges Of Life As A Career Musician, Andrew Derek Heinzman 2019 California State University, Monterey Bay

Stressful Music: A Look Into The Challenges Of Life As A Career Musician, Andrew Derek Heinzman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper will discuss various aspects of life as a career musician and the challenges faced while working in this field. It will refer to different levels of fame and how certain challenges are present within those levels. Oftentimes the general public is not aware of the degree to which musicians face stress from their line of work. Conflict with bandmates, record labels, and sometimes the public often compound other issues musicians are already dealing with. The pressures of touring and low income can be emotionally draining for many. On top of all that, there is a culture of partying ...
