La Economía De La Violencia: La Ciudad Juárez Y El Mercado Libre De La Muerte, Kritika Amanjee 2018 Union College

La Economía De La Violencia: La Ciudad Juárez Y El Mercado Libre De La Muerte, Kritika Amanjee

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the utilization of human life to further the parallel economies of manufacture and narco-trafficking in Mexico. It begins by recalling the impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Mexico’s local economies. Shifts in economic dynamics that resulted from NAFTA internally displaced thousands of impoverished Mexicans, ultimately pushing them into the growing economies of manufacture and narco-trafficking. The manufacture industry and its effects on the common people are examined with a specific focus on Ciudad Juárez, a border city in the state of Chihuahua. The growth of maquiladoras attracted thousands of young women to ...

Los Efectos Del Machismo En El Desarrollo De Los Trastornos De Salud Mental De Las Mujeres En México, Tiffany George 2018 Union College

Los Efectos Del Machismo En El Desarrollo De Los Trastornos De Salud Mental De Las Mujeres En México, Tiffany George

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the role of machismo and how it impacts women in Mexico. Machismo dominates Mexican society where men have complete authority and control over women, thus trapping them under patriarchal rule. This thesis examines how the novel, La Genara written by Rosina Conde, highlights the detrimental effects of machismo through letters between two sisters, Genara and Luisa. This study examines the ways in which Mexican women are silenced, oppressed and abused and the ways in which societal norms affects their mental state, and sometimes to mental disorders, and it also shows that in such a society, there is ...

Traducciones Para Y Por Los Españoles Americanos: El Papel De Los Traductores En La Independencia De Hispanoamericana / Translation For And By Spanish Americans: Translators’ Role During Spanish America’S Struggle For Independence, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

As is well known, political independence in the Americas was gained through a long, violent process in which colonies broke away from their colonial centers. Different revolutionaries, patriots, and liberators acted within their immediate colonial context; nonetheless, a shared trove of ideas existed in all of the Americas which helped, above all, to justify their actions. These ideas (largely emanating from Europe’s Enlightenment and in the Americas originally practiced in England’s former North American colonies) spread throughout the region, in part, thanks to the efforts of several translators. These were men who traveled to different places for different ...

‘Dritter Raum’ Und ‘Hybridität’: Der Fall Des Argentinisch-Deutschen Schriftstellers Robert(O) Schopflocher, Reinhard Andress

Reinhard Andress

The percentage of German immigrants in Argentina, measured by the total population of the country, never exceeded the 2% threshold, but their integration took many different forms. ' This was already proven by the 2008 colloquium in Buenos Aires on the subject "La inserci6n de la minoria alemana en Argentina entre 1900 y 1933" (published in 2008 as Volume IV of the Anuario Argentino de Germanfstica). Even this colloquium, which does not commit itself to any period of time, will further broaden the integration therna. What makes the writer Robert {o) Schopflocher interesting in this context is an incorporation in Argentina ...

Erinnerungen An Robert(O) Schopflocher: Ein Multikulturelles Leben Als Vorbild, Reinhard Andress

Reinhard Andress

Coarticulation In Two Fricative-Vowel Sequences Of Latin American Spanish, Jeff Renaud 2018 Augustana College, Rock Island Illinois

Coarticulation In Two Fricative-Vowel Sequences Of Latin American Spanish, Jeff Renaud

Celebration of Learning

Dialectal surveys of Latin American Spanish (Perissinotto 1975, Resnick 1975) describe three main possible pronunciations for fu (fuego 'fire') and fo (foco 'focus') sequences: faithful [f], velarized [x], and bilabialized [ɸ], in order of frequency. While the velar realization has received phonetic and theoretical consideration (Lipski 1995, Mazzaro 2011), little is understood about the voiceless bilabial fricative [ɸ] in Spanish. This paper describes a three-part production study to uniformly account for the unfaithful velar and bilabial realizations.

Mazzaro (2011) explains the velar [x] variant by arguing that, given the acoustic similarity of, e.g., [fu]/[xu], listeners misperceive a speaker ...

Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender 2018 Fordham University

Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper aims to shed light on the dissonance caused by the superimposition of Dominant Human Systems on Natural Systems. I highlight the synthetic nature of Dominant Human Systems as egoic and linguistic phenomenon manufactured by a mere portion of the human population, which renders them inherently oppressive unto peoples and landscapes whose wisdom were barred from the design process. In pursuing a radical pragmatic approach to mending the simultaneous oppression and destruction of the human being and the earth, I highlight the necessity of minimizing entropic chaos caused by excess energy expenditure, an essential feature of systems that aim ...

From Davao City To Daly City: Examining Translanguaging And Transnationalism In The 1.5-Generation Filipin(A/O) Americans Of Daly City, Rita Ewing

Master's Theses

In the field of migration studies, research on transnationalism has been well

established. Applying an intersectional framework of post-colonial narrative and

linguistic anthropology to transnational migration, this research allows us to better

understand how the transnational immigrant deploys language. Through a nostalgia

studies approach, this study is able to analyze how transnational immigrants place value

on their heritage and second languages, and reflexively deploy their language sets to

reflect their unique positionality. This paper is a case study examination of five adult

members of the 1.5-generation of Filipin(a/o) American immigrants, who immigrated to

the US before the ...

Flipping Student-Teacher Paradigms In Western’S Employee Language Program, María José Palacios Figueroa, Jacob Dodrill 2018 Western Washington University

Flipping Student-Teacher Paradigms In Western’S Employee Language Program, María José Palacios Figueroa, Jacob Dodrill

Scholars Week

Western’s Employee Language Program (ELP) offers free professional development language workshops on campus for university faculty and staff. This poster outlines the various ways that ELP workshops diverge from the traditional language classroom in order to prioritize confidence and accessibility for both program participants and classroom facilitators. Western’s ELP creates atypical classroom dynamics by placing student facilitators--undergraduate students with expertise in the target language, who are often younger and have less professional experience than participants--at the front of the classroom. This model inherently rejects associations of age and knowledge often found in academia. ELP facilitators create casual environments ...

Entre Les Lignes, France 1914-1918: La Poesie Et La Pensée De La Grande Guerre Au Front Et À L'Arrière, Jaclyn Schmitz 2018 Wright State University - Main Campus

Entre Les Lignes, France 1914-1918: La Poesie Et La Pensée De La Grande Guerre Au Front Et À L'Arrière, Jaclyn Schmitz

The University Honors Program

Grammatical Gender Acquisition In L2 Spanish, Alanna Quinn, Mónica Cabrera 2018 Loyola Marymount University

Grammatical Gender Acquisition In L2 Spanish, Alanna Quinn, Mónica Cabrera

Honors Thesis

Grammatical gender, identified as “one of the most difficult structures that non-native speakers need to acquire” (Alamry & Sabourin, 2017) does not exist in English. L1 English speakers learning L2 Spanish must acquire this new grammatical feature. This thesis investigates this acquisition.

A literature review synthesizes the findings of studies on L2 acquisition of Spanish grammatical gender, and includes an overview of the structure and function of gender within both English and Spanish, as well as a variety of L2 acquisition process hypotheses. An analysis of four introductory Spanish textbooks is offered regarding their presentation of grammatical gender. The findings of the literature review and textbook analysis inform the elaboration of pedagogical recommendations.

Four current hypotheses regarding L2 acquisition of grammatical gender are explained: Full Transfer/Full Access; Failed Functional Features; Morphological Underspecification; and Missing Surface Inflection. The textbook analysis reveals differences between the presentation of noun endings for each gender, their reference to the English gender system, and the connection between gender and number. Notable similarities between the four textbooks are the lack of: noun ending frequency statistics, explicit distinctions made between grammatical and natural gender and between sexual and non-sexual nouns, and activities requiring gender agreement between adjectives and non-sexual nouns.

The pedagogical strategies that arise from this study ...

The Cool Medium. The Global Pedagogy Of Eportfolio In The Foreign Language Classroom, Giulia Guarnieri

Publications and Research

The student-centered and integrative pedagogy of ePortfolio finds perfect applicability in the foreign language classroom. In contrast, textbooks for Italian language elementary courses, for the most part, implement a traditional and grammatical based methodological approach which hiders the process of ePortfolio integration which instead places greater emphasis on global and integrative pedagogy. The study discusses the implications these factors hold in preparing foreign languages instructors to use ePortfolio technology underlining its role as a cool medium which provides meaningful impact on student learning and participation
