Genre, Media, And Communicating To Learn In The Disciplines: Vygotsky Developmental Theory And North American Genre Theory, David R. Russell, Patricia Harms

English Publications

What is the relationship between medium and genre in learning and development? North American genre theory suggests following Miller (1984, 1994) that genre is social action. Genres evoke expectations, direct attention, guide action and suggest ‘what motives we may have.’ Yet the relationship between media and genres, as Miller suggested at SIGET IV (1997), is complex. The blog, for example, quickly evolved from being one genre to many genres and, today, might be said to be a medium more than a genre. Bazerman at SIGET IV (2007) argued, following Vygotsky (1997), that genres −particularly written genres− ‘provide highly differentiated, scaffolded ...

Writing Chinuk Wawa: A Materials Development Case Study, Sarah A. Braun Hamilton 2010 Portland State University

Writing Chinuk Wawa: A Materials Development Case Study, Sarah A. Braun Hamilton

Dissertations and Theses

This study explored the development of new texts by fluent non-native speakers of Chinuk Wawa, an endangered indigenous contact language of the Pacific Northwest United States. The texts were developed as part of the language and culture program of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon for use in university-sponsored language classes. The collaborative process of developing 12 texts was explored through detailed revision analysis and interviews with the materials developers and other stakeholders.

Fluent non-native speakers relied on collaboration, historical documentation, reference materials, grammatical models, and their own intuitions and cultural sensibilities to develop texts that ...

Cross-Dressing And Lesbian Representation In Belle Époque By Fernando Trueba, Nuria Cruz-Camara 2009 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Cross-Dressing And Lesbian Representation In Belle Époque By Fernando Trueba, Nuria Cruz-Camara

Nuria Cruz-Camara

"The Oscar-winning film Belle Époque (1992), directed by Fernando Trueba, systematically deconstructs patriarchal forms of masculinities by mocking the “Iberian macho” stereotype, by representing actively desiring women, and by allegedly making the male protagonist the object of the female gaze. The inversion of traditional gender roles throughout the film reaches its peak at the carnival cross-dressing sequence, when Violeta, dressed as a male soldier, aggressively seduces Fernando, dressed as a maid, and maintains total control over the love-making process. However, as I will demonstrate in this article, this seemingly subversive reversal of sexual identities is superficial and, in fact, reinstates ...

Transferencia Diferencial: El Caso Del Náhuatl Y El Español, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

Using Ning For Conversation Partner Networks, Krista Bittenbender

Krista Bittenbender Royal

Providing opportunities for conversation practice is one way that an IEP can help students improve their English as well as enhance their engagement in the language learning process. However, matching individual language learners to fluent English speakers can be difficult and time consuming. This workshop will introduce participants involved in setting up such interactions to Ning, a free online social networking platform which can facilitate the creation of individualized networks. Participants will gain insights into how one IEP used Ning to connect ELLs to university students interested in having conversation partners.
