Unearthing Early Haitian Creole Literature: The Literary, Linguistic And Sociocultural Significance Of Ti-Jak By Carrié Paultre, Jeana Clocksin
Senior Honors Theses
The name Carrié Paultre and his works are virtually absent from the Haitian Creole literary canon. Nevertheless, his novellas and short stories make up an important component of early Haitian Creole literary production, with his earliest novella published in 1965, a significant ten years before the publication of Dézafi by Frankétienne. In this paper, my intent is not to supplant Dézafi and other early Haitian Creole novels or diminish their importance, but rather to draw attention to a neglected wealth of Haitian Creole literature preceding the publication of formal novels. In doing so, I hope to open up a dialogue ...

In the last decade, university institutions have been increasing, which demand from the teaching staff a greater offer of courses where technology is effectively incorporated into teaching. Critical studies published today, relating to the use of different technological tools in conjunction with language teaching, repeatedly contain the terms "distance learning" or "online course", as well as the terms "hybrid" or "combined" for make reference to the same model, to the same type of course. This study distinguishes two terms to refer to two models of courses: "hybrid at a distance" and "face-to-face ALAO". The oral dexterity of 132 participants was ...

Nuestros Países Inventados: Las Narrativas Nacionales En La Obra De Isabel Allende, Hannah Eckstrom
Honors Projects and Presentations: Undergraduate

Early Guaraní Printing: Nieremberg’S De La Diferencia And The Global Dissemination Of Seventeenth-Century Spanish Asceticism, D. Scott Hendrickson
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article examines both how and why the Spanish Jesuit Juan Eusebio Nieremberg’s (1595–1658) once famous treatise De la diferencia entre lo temporal y eterno (1640) came to be translated and printed in the Paraguay reductions in 1705, the significance it holds in the transmission of Iberian asceticism to the American missions and how Juan Yaparí and other Guaraní craftsmen participated in its printing and enhanced its illustration. It situates the Guaraní imprint within the context of early modern mission practices and the book-trade of Counter-Reformation Europe, and seeks to show how—in what some scholars consider to ...

Language study abroad offers the possibility of acquiring a multitude of competencies, linguistic and otherwise. While historically study abroad research has emphasized linguistic gains in isolation, it has gradually moved towards a more sociocultural approach whereby individual factors and intercultural competencies are seen as integral to the process of acquiring knowledge of a language. With remaining gaps in the literature, and as new instruments emerge, so too do new opportunities for tracking and measuring learning outcomes in innovative ways. The present study, framed by the intervention hypothesis and sociocultural theory, utilizes the social media platform Google+ as a space to ...

Gaspar Octavio Hernández, Un Poeta Modernista, Karina Ayodele Clarke Murrain
Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures
Panama is known empirically for its geography, climate and natural environment, so it is not surprising that the Afro-Panamanian writer and journalist, Gaspar Octavio Hernández (1893-1918) uses climate and natural conditions as inspirations for his writing. As a modernista, it is entirely plausible that Hernández was attracted to and compelled by both the process and the production of writing poetry. As we approach his work critically, it is evident that Hernández explores nature in his work and his acknowledgment thereof is the principal motivation of his poetry. From this point, Hernández establishes not only a framework for exploring themes identity ...

Strength Or Weakness: When To Break The (Grammatical) Rules, 2018 Dickinson College
Strength Or Weakness: When To Break The (Grammatical) Rules, Mohala Kaliebe
Student Scholarship & Creative Works By Year
When it comes to the evaluation of the grammatical and syntactical aspects of written language, two perspectives stand apparently opposed. The prescriptivist perspective promotes strict rule-following; the descriptivist, an acceptance of rule breaking as natural language usage and evolution. Yet the diverse nature of written language – in terms of purpose, audience, style, etc. – demands the application of both, with emphasis on one or the other depending upon such distinctions. Although certain situations demand prescriptive grammatical adherence, the effectiveness of technically erroneous communication in colloquial contexts suggests that the successful transfer of meaning outweighs the importance of standard, conventional language usage.

Troping The Enemy: Metaphor, Culture, And The Big Data Black Boxes Of National Security, Robert Albro
Secrecy and Society
This article considers how cultural understanding is being brought into the work of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), through an analysis of its Metaphor program. It examines the type of social science underwriting this program, unpacks implications of the agency’s conception of metaphor for understanding so-called cultures of interest, and compares IARPA’s to competing accounts of how metaphor works to create cultural meaning. The article highlights some risks posed by key deficits in the Intelligence Community's (IC) approach to culture, which relies on the cognitive linguistic theories of George Lakoff and colleagues. It also explores ...
