Resistencia Y Asimilación: El Espacio Liminal En El Teatro Cubanoamericano, Michael Mardoian 2018 Trinity College, Hartford Connecticut

Resistencia Y Asimilación: El Espacio Liminal En El Teatro Cubanoamericano, Michael Mardoian

Senior Theses and Projects

The Cuban Revolution that took place in 1959 sparked a mass movement of Cubans to leave the island known as the Cuban Diaspora. To live in another place, a country and within a culture drastically different is a continual internal and external confrontation that many Cubans face living in the United States. Immigration and exile are central themes that emerge from Cuban literature and art. In the field of theater, many Cuban and Cuban-American playwrights such as Matías Montes Huidobro (1931), Alberto Pedro (1954-2005) and María Irene Fornés (1930), have illustrated the effects of immigration and exile on the displaced ...

"Ay De Mi Alhama": El Rey Moro ¿Figura Cruel, Sentimental, O Mezcla De Ambas?, Katelyn M. Burchill 2018 Rhode Island College

"Ay De Mi Alhama": El Rey Moro ¿Figura Cruel, Sentimental, O Mezcla De Ambas?, Katelyn M. Burchill

Honors Projects Overview

Addressing The Assumption; A Case Study On Student Motivations And Barriers To Study Second Language Abroad, Rebecca Schano 2018 SIT Graduate Institute

Addressing The Assumption; A Case Study On Student Motivations And Barriers To Study Second Language Abroad, Rebecca Schano

Capstone Collection

Historically, second language learning and study abroad programming have run in natural conjunction. However, in recent years there has been a slow but steady decline in the number of foreign language students in higher education who are choosing to study abroad to further their second language acquisition. This study explores this topic through a case study at Marquette University, and aims to answer the research question: What are the motivations and barriers of foreign language students to study their second language abroad? Using a student survey and in-person interviews with professionals in the field, data is collected on the most ...

Linguistic Feminism & The Body In 20th-Century French Feminist Texts, Lauren Hammett 2018 College of William and Mary

Linguistic Feminism & The Body In 20th-Century French Feminist Texts, Lauren Hammett

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the use of linguistic feminism and references to the body in 20th-century French feminist texts, and particularly in the work of Luce Irigaray. This involves an investigation into the nature of French feminism and the validity of the accusations of essentialism that have been leveled against it by many critics. The thesis argues for French feminists' place in feminist scholarship and for an anti-essentialist, more figurative reading of their discussions of the body, in addition to examining their discussions of language, including écriture féminine. Finally, the implications of French feminist ideology for feminism today, as well as ...

A Hostile Neighbor: A Historical Analysis Of The Problematization Of Muslim Migration To Spain Department/Degree: Department Of Modern Languages And Literatures, Ellen Grove 2018 Grand Valley State University

A Hostile Neighbor: A Historical Analysis Of The Problematization Of Muslim Migration To Spain Department/Degree: Department Of Modern Languages And Literatures, Ellen Grove

Honors Projects

Since the death of fascist dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, Spain has witnessed one of the greatest explosions in its real population in the nation’s history, brought about by extensive migrations from Africa and the Middle East. The increasing presence of immigrants, particularly from predominantly Muslim-countries, has forced Spain to reflect on its own idiosyncratic past of coexistence and violent exclusion between Catholics and Muslims. This exposition investigates how Spain’s unique history has produced a confusing atmosphere for Muslim migrants, who profess a deep kinship towards the country, but who are systematically marginalized by Spanish immigration law.
