Three Laisses From The Franco-Italian Song Of Roland, John T. Duval

Transference

These three laisses, that is, decasyllabic verse-paragraphs of various lengths whose lines end with the same assonance, are from the thirteenth-century Franco-Italian version of The Song of Roland, known as the V4 manuscript of St. Mark's Church, Venice. They illustrate creative thirteenth-century innovations, in a slightly different language, added to the much better known twelfth-century Anglo-Norman French Chanson de Roland, known as the Oxford version.

Focusing The Gap: Productive Post-Iep Development, Kerrie Ellen Lovercheck 2018 Western Oregon University

Focusing The Gap: Productive Post-Iep Development, Kerrie Ellen Lovercheck

Master's of Arts in Interpreting Studies (MAIS) Action Research

For signed language interpreters there are a limited number of formal transition programs to aid the development from completion of an interpreter education program (IEP) to competent professional. This period of time is an important time for building a professional foundation. Research in other practice professions has shown that gradual transitions towards autonomy under adequate supervision and coaching provide a forum for practitioners to grow in their professional abilities with the support needed to guide them. The type of program used as a model in this study is the medical residency program where underclassmen learn a new skill from an ...

The Art Songs Of Kyrylo Stetsenko: Ukrainian Lyric Diction Guide, Olena Bratishko

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The genre of Ukrainian art song represents a significant body of work to be discovered. Yet, in the twenty-first century the Ukrainian art song repertoire still remains one of the less explored genres of the Eastern European music, mainly due to the political factors playing a significant role in the history of Ukraine.

The present monograph serves a purpose of a reference guide for singers interested in performing Ukrainian art song. A brief history of Ukrainian art song will explore the development of song as a vocal genre at a certain period in time: the importance of folk song tradition ...

The Complexity Of Language And Learning: Deconstructing Teachers' Conceptions Of Academic Language, Amy J. Heineke, Sabina Rak Neugebauer 2018 Loyola University Chicago

The Complexity Of Language And Learning: Deconstructing Teachers' Conceptions Of Academic Language, Amy J. Heineke, Sabina Rak Neugebauer

School of Education: Faculty Publications and Other Works

“Academic language” is a term that is thrown around frequently in educational circles, particularly in recent years. Whether in pre-service teacher education with candidates and cooperating teachers preparing for the widely required Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA; Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity, 2016), or in-service teachers grappling with the implementation of the Common Core Standards (National Governors Association, 2010), academic language has become de rigueur a jargon term required for a number of current classroom, school, and university initiatives. But what is academic language?

Troping The Enemy: Metaphor, Culture, And The Big Data Black Boxes Of National Security, Robert Albro 2018 American University

Troping The Enemy: Metaphor, Culture, And The Big Data Black Boxes Of National Security, Robert Albro

Secrecy and Society

This article considers how cultural understanding is being brought into the work of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), through an analysis of its Metaphor program. It examines the type of social science underwriting this program, unpacks implications of the agency’s conception of metaphor for understanding so-called cultures of interest, and compares IARPA’s to competing accounts of how metaphor works to create cultural meaning. The article highlights some risks posed by key deficits in the Intelligence Community's (IC) approach to culture, which relies on the cognitive linguistic theories of George Lakoff and colleagues. It also explores ...

Talk And Let Talk: The Effects Of Language Proficiency On Speaking Up And Competence Perceptions In Multinational Teams, Jessica Li, Y. Connie Yuan, Natalie Bazarova, Bradford S. Bell 2018 Cornell University

Talk And Let Talk: The Effects Of Language Proficiency On Speaking Up And Competence Perceptions In Multinational Teams, Jessica Li, Y. Connie Yuan, Natalie Bazarova, Bradford S. Bell

CAHRS ResearchLink

[Excerpt] In global firms multinational teams (MTs) are a way of life. Increasingly these firms find it essential to assemble just the right mix of talent from around the globe to tackle complex tasks.Typically MTs perform much if not all of their work using a common language which, while necessary, can have its drawbacks. For example, it is unlikely that all team members will be equally proficient in the chosen language. This can cause problems for team members who are less facile with the language and, thus, find it difficult to contribute to the work of their teams in ...

發揮新體:王勃樂府詩的復變 = Exploring New Poetic Forms: Convention And Innovation In Wang Bo's Music Bureau Poetry, Timothy Wai Keung Chan 2018 Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Hong Kong Baptist University

Exploring New Poetic Forms: Convention And Innovation In Wang Bo's Music Bureau Poetry, Timothy Wai Keung Chan
