Mermaid Song: The Notebooks Of The Writing Woman, Gianna T. Ward-Vetrano

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis is built on the model of Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook, that is, it is a feminist project of holistic integration that does not reject fracturing, ambiguity, or contradiction, but aims to attain a more complex and thus truer portrait of the woman writing. Lessing’s notebooks examine conflicts between communism and capitalism, racial conflict in Africa, conflict between men and women, and the conflict between the protagonist Anna Wulf’s identity as a woman and her identity as a writer, each of which she then attempts to integrate into the singular golden notebook of the title ...

Lyrical Mysticism: The Writing And Reception Of Catherine Of Siena, Lisa Tagliaferri 2017 Graduate Center, City University of New York

Lyrical Mysticism: The Writing And Reception Of Catherine Of Siena, Lisa Tagliaferri

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Lyrical Mysticism: The Writing and Reception of Catherine of Siena (https://caterina.io) affirms the 14th-century mystic Catherine of Siena as a writer through contextualizing her texts among the corpus of contemporary Italian literature, and studying her reception in the Renaissance period of Italy and England. Joining an increasing body of recent meaningful scholarship that has been making significant progress to recover many overlooked and peripheral female voices of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, this work serves to fully assert Catherine as a writer of work that is literarily significant and worthy of textual analysis alongside contemporary male Italian ...

This research examines a geographical and historical panorama of Italian agriculture, the history of urban agriculture, the phenomenon of urban green zones from the Middle Ages to present day in the city of Bologna, and four urban garden case studies in the Bologna area: a city-owned community garden on 142 Via Saragozza, a preschool in the Giardini Margherita greenhouses, an urban farm in the marginalized Pilastro neighborhood, and an African garden in a refugee welcome center in Crespellano. In all four experiments, urban gardens are tools of socialization and civic collaboration. Through my interviews and observations, I unearthed the environmental ...

Il Parco Del Mincio: Un Caso Di Studio Interculturale: Dall’Organizzazione Del Parco E Regolamentazione Del Volontariato Alla Definizione E Creazione Di Un Watershed., Natalie Mcneill

Student Honors Theses By Year

This thesis focuses on the Mincio Park in Mantua, Italy, which uses volunteers to protect the Park and is part of an important watershed. Before going to Mantua, a list of vocabulary and research about the Park and volunteers were compiled to be able to discuss scientific concepts during interviews. Research questions were created to understand how the Park is managed, the motivations of volunteers and administrators, the role of volunteers, and the main environmental problems that the Park faces. Through interviews, the goal of the project was to understand the entire watershed. It became clear during this process, however ...

Student Honors Theses By Year

This thesis approaches Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Quartet – which consists of the novels My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child – in two different modes. The first chapter concentrates on research that I undertook in Naples during the Winter Break of 2016-17. During that time I visited the areas that Ferrante writes about in the Quartet, and I annotated my bodily and emotional reactions to the Neapolitan environment, which, together with Italian feminist theory, helped me reflect how Naples impacts the main characters. This chapter ...

Aiscrima E Checchi Italian-American Dialect And Development In The New Millennium, Elizabeth Loyacano Pedrotti

Honors Theses

The Italian-American identity is inextricably linked with language. Italian immigrants and their descendants have formed a culture in the United states with a dynamic history, particularly when it comes to language use and perceptions. This study examined multigenerational Italian Americans’ perceptions of English, Italian, and the unique Italian-American dialect; it aimed to discover changes in the usage of Italian-American dialect over time. Italian Americans in the Dayton area were interviewed and presented with surveys to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. Results indicate that while overall usage and recognition of Italian-American lexical items has decreased dramatically since the 1980s, younger ...

Paese Di Accoglienza: Il Successo Di Un Modello Innovativo Di Accoglienza Dei Richiedenti Asilo In Italia, Isabela Arena Secanechia

Senior Capstone Theses

This work discusses Italy's migrant reception system including its flaws and their effects. Furthermore, this work explores an alternative, sustainable model of migrant reception created in Riace, Calabria, that has been successful in varying towns across Italy. Ultimately, this work argues that this system, which is beneficial to both Italians and incoming migrants — specifically asylum seekers — can and should be implemented nationally to counter the current flawed system.

La Divisione Fra I Divisionisti, Meijing He 2017 Trinity College, Hartford Connecticut

La Divisione Fra I Divisionisti, Meijing He

Senior Theses and Projects

My thesis explores the philosophical and ideological divergence among the artists of the Italian Divisionism. Divisionism is a distinctive artistic phenomenon that had a short lifespan of twenty years from 1890 to 1910. Like the French Pointilism, it absorbed the influence of contemporary scientific theories on optical perception in relation to colors. Instead of blending colors in a traditional way, the artists of this style juxtaposed individual, broken strokes in primary colors to achieve the effect of maximum luminosity. Unlike the French neo-impressionists, however, their subject matter featured a strong involvement in social and political issues, idealized depiction of nature ...

Dante’S Divine Comedy: A Pastoral Subversion, Katie Francom 2017 Brigham Young University

Dante’S Divine Comedy: A Pastoral Subversion, Katie Francom

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

This paper attempts to widen the scholarly understanding of Dante’s use of pastoral modes within The Divine Comedy. By examining typical pastoral themes, Dante’s use of Virgil as a guide, and the presence of pastoral themes within the Comedy, this paper will ultimately assert that Dante completely reshapes the pastoral genre, taking it from its typically pagan history and giving it new, Christian meaning. By so doing he makes his beautifully artistic story into an enlightening spiritual journey for the reader.

Comfort Food, Acquired Taste, And Fusion Cuisine: A Migrant Journey, Giovanna Bellesia 2017 Smith College

Comfort Food, Acquired Taste, And Fusion Cuisine: A Migrant Journey, Giovanna Bellesia

Italian Language and Literature: Faculty Publications

This essay looks at food through the lens of immigration by analyzing the work of migrant writers in Italy. Comfort food, acquired taste and fusion cuisine are used to illustrate different stages of the migration process. Migrant writers have often used food as a metaphor to describe their longing for their homeland, for an idealized time and place when they felt safe, secure in their identity. Cooking and eating, sharing and learning culinary traditions foster integration and develop acquired tastes in the destination culture. The result is a sense of belonging, but also the formation of a split identity and ...

The Search For An Identity: The Merging Of The Past And Present To Form A Future In Italian Culture, Olivia Witwer 2017 University of Colorado, Boulder

The Search For An Identity: The Merging Of The Past And Present To Form A Future In Italian Culture, Olivia Witwer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

A country is often defined by its national identity and how it expresses the history of its cultural characteristics. For a majority of its history, the Italian peninsula was a land that was separated by multiple dukedoms and republics that were also marked by war and violence. When Italy became a unified nation in 1861 it struggled to bring its unique cities together under one government and culture. This type of unification had already been progressing throughout much of Europe, whereas Italy was just starting to forge a unified national identity. In order to form a true national identity that ...

Poesía Amorosa De Una Erudita Del Xvii: Traducción Y Creación En El Pastor Fido De Isabel Correa, Almudena Vidorreta 2017 CUNY Graduate Center

Poesía Amorosa De Una Erudita Del Xvii: Traducción Y Creación En El Pastor Fido De Isabel Correa, Almudena Vidorreta

Publications and Research

Songs Of Passage And Sacrifice: Gabriella Ghermandi’S Stories In Performance, Laura Dolp, Eveljn Ferraro 2016 Santa Clara Univeristy

Songs Of Passage And Sacrifice: Gabriella Ghermandi’S Stories In Performance, Laura Dolp, Eveljn Ferraro

Modern Languages & Literature

In this time and on this page, Spivak's island seems an apt place to begin a discussion about storytelling, resistance, and belonging. This chapter documents a conversation originating from two disciplinary perspectives-literature (Ferraro) and music (Dolp). We explore how spoken-word performance in a global context can facilitate social empowerment, craft a cultural past, and invigorate political consciousness. Although our analytical strategies and some of our conclusions differ, we share the assertion that the notion of artistic citizenship as it is defined elsewhere in this collection is considerably complicated, and even requires redefinition, in the context of non-Western cultures. Our ...

Between Life And Literature: The Influence Of Don Quixote And Madame Bovary On Twentieth-Century Women's Fiction, Victoria Tomasulo 2016 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Between Life And Literature: The Influence Of Don Quixote And Madame Bovary On Twentieth-Century Women's Fiction, Victoria Tomasulo

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project demonstrates the influence of two foundational novels in the Western canon, Don Quixote and Madame Bovary, on twentieth-century British, Italian, and Anglo-American women’s fiction. Both novels illustrate the dangers and pleasures of literary influence. Stylistically innovative, they anticipated concerns that were of import to feminist literary critics in the seventies and beyond: the transformative power of the reading encounter, its normative and subversive effects on gendered identities, and the need of individual writers to liberate themselves from the shackles of literary convention. Drawing upon textual and paratextual evidence such as interviews, journal entries, and essays, I argue ...

Dialogic Faiths: Multi-Genre Expression In Religious Narrative, Rosemary L. Demos 2016 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Dialogic Faiths: Multi-Genre Expression In Religious Narrative, Rosemary L. Demos

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

As persuasive or expository texts, religious conversion narratives tend towards monologic language, and texts that advocate one particular creed or institution often reflect the unity of faith through linguistically totalizing methods. This study, however, examines the dialogic interactions found in certain religious narratives. The texts included in this analysis recount unusual conversion outcomes: not to formally established church institutions, but rather to a heightened religious experience and in some cases a call to leadership in establishing new social orders. In these texts, the dynamic between personal and communal religious experience is tense, sometimes precarious; the difficulties of engaging in social ...

DCS Faculty Publications

This data set represents a first attempt to identify the North American colleges and universities that offer Italian courses at any level and also have support for digital humanities (DH) pedagogy or scholarship at any level. The list of schools with Italian programs was developed using the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) list of undergraduate and graduate programs and College Source as of July 2016. The list was supplemented by checking if institutions listed with CenterNet (for Digital Humanities Centers) also have Italian programs. Overall, 10% of the Italian programs identified were not included in the AATI list ...
