Disturbing The Storm: Narratives From The Liminal Space: Investigating The Commonalities Between Older Afghan Hazara Women And Calabrian Exiles Through Theories Of Storytelling And Creative Led Research, Jema Anna Stellato Pledger

Theses

This research draws from my lived experience as a second generation immigrant of Calabrian exiles and explores the commonalities between older Afghan Hazara women and Calabrians. Working with culturally diverse groups the research examines liminality through the narratives of both cultures and investigates whether the experiences of recent female refugee populations in Australia, reflect those of previous immigrant communities. Applying theories of storytelling and liminality, the research asks, "Can a multidisciplinary arts approach reflect cultural commonalities through the process of becoming other?"

The research observes the process older Hazara Afghan women1 embark upon when negotiating change post war and dislocation ...

La Tumba Del Buque Perdido, Mario Martinez 2018 University of Texas at El Paso

La Tumba Del Buque Perdido, Mario Martinez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Subjectivity And Politics In Pasolini's Bourgeois Tragic Theater, Andrew Korn 2018 University of Pennsylvania

Subjectivity And Politics In Pasolini's Bourgeois Tragic Theater, Andrew Korn

Publicly Accessible Penn Dissertations

Italian author Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote his plays Affabulazione, Orgia and Porcile during his shift to theater in the late 1960s as a critical response to consumer culture in Italy and the West more generally. For him, this expanding mass, petit-bourgeois civilization displaced Italy’s premodern cultures and their sense of the sacred. In his plays, his bourgeois protagonists re-experience the sacred and undergo conversion. The works engender his new “bourgeois tragic” genre, in which the sacred’s return destroys modern subjectivity. They offer a unique examination of this subjectivity, its radicalizing breakdown and the potential radical politics that could ...

Naming Rape: The Social Practice Of Power, Agency, And Victimization In The Italo-Ethiopian War, 1936-1940, Caroline Waldron Merithew 2017 University of Dayton

Naming Rape: The Social Practice Of Power, Agency, And Victimization In The Italo-Ethiopian War, 1936-1940, Caroline Waldron Merithew

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

This paper, “Naming Rape,” shows how and when rape got named as part of the movement against the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1936. I show that activists used the term strategically at certain points and specific places of the struggle to sway opinion and move the international community to challenge fascist violence and expansionism. Naming rape was something new for antiwar activists at this time.

Transferring Paremias. Cultural, Linguistic, And Literary Transitions Of Proverbs And Proverbial Phrases By Vincenzo Brusantino, Pompeo Sarnelli, And John Florio, Daniela D'Eugenio 2017 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Transferring Paremias. Cultural, Linguistic, And Literary Transitions Of Proverbs And Proverbial Phrases By Vincenzo Brusantino, Pompeo Sarnelli, And John Florio, Daniela D'Eugenio

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation demonstrates how literary paremias, i.e. proverbs and proverbial phrases, constitute a rich archive of considerable historical, cultural, and linguistic significance. As discursive phenomena, paremias are usually studied in the context of oral traditions, but this study examines them in terms of what they reveal about the literary works in which they appear. Specifically, it analyzes the context in which they are employed and, through them, it extracts the author’s perspectives, references to and borrowings from previous works, responses to the social and cultural conditions of the time, and effects on the narrative. The exploration of paremias ...

La Emigración A Norteamérica, La Peregrinación Y La Hospitalidad, Charli Tyree 2017 University of Alabama at Birmingham

La Emigración A Norteamérica, La Peregrinación Y La Hospitalidad, Charli Tyree

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

Gedichte Als Antwort Auf Den 2. Weltkrieg: Gomringers Und Jandls Konkrete Poesie In Der Nachkriegszeit, Miranda Gilgore

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

Geräusche Von Innen: Musik Und Der Kuleschow Effekt Im Film Die Wand, Brianna Bean 2017 Butler University

Geräusche Von Innen: Musik Und Der Kuleschow Effekt Im Film Die Wand, Brianna Bean

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The Disperata, From Medieval Italy To Renaissance France, Gabriella Scarlatta 2017 University of Michigan-Dearborn

The Disperata, From Medieval Italy To Renaissance France, Gabriella Scarlatta

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Rich with morose invectives, the Italian lyric genre of the disperata builds toward a crescendo of despair, with the speakers damning and condemning their beloved, their enemy, their destiny, Fortune, Love, and often themselves. Although Petrarch and Petrarchism have been amply analyzed as fertile sources for late Renaissance poets in France, the influence of the Italian disperata in this context has yet to receive proper scholarly attention. This study explores how the language and themes of the disperata - including hopelessness, death, suicide, doomed love, collective trauma, and damnations - are creatively adopted by several generations of poets from its beginning in ...

Lyrical Mysticism: The Writing And Reception Of Catherine Of Siena, Lisa Tagliaferri 2017 Graduate Center, City University of New York

Lyrical Mysticism: The Writing And Reception Of Catherine Of Siena, Lisa Tagliaferri

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Lyrical Mysticism: The Writing and Reception of Catherine of Siena (https://caterina.io) affirms the 14th-century mystic Catherine of Siena as a writer through contextualizing her texts among the corpus of contemporary Italian literature, and studying her reception in the Renaissance period of Italy and England. Joining an increasing body of recent meaningful scholarship that has been making significant progress to recover many overlooked and peripheral female voices of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, this work serves to fully assert Catherine as a writer of work that is literarily significant and worthy of textual analysis alongside contemporary male Italian ...

Not My Queer: Queer Representation In Contemporary Italian Serial Television, Julia Heim 2017 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Not My Queer: Queer Representation In Contemporary Italian Serial Television, Julia Heim

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Contemporary Italian television, like many national televisions, has entered a period in which the relationships the producers and consumers of televisual content are increasingly indistinguishable. In this age of media convergence the new participants of this medium work across platforms to actively engage, consume, create, and recreate both televisual content and our understanding of the medium. These new relationships require a new understanding of the semiotic and discursive changes taking place in television so that we may reconceptualize the contemporary interplay between media and society.

This dissertation maps out a new understanding of the televisual economy through an elaboration of ...

Mermaid Song: The Notebooks Of The Writing Woman, Gianna T. Ward-Vetrano 2017 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Mermaid Song: The Notebooks Of The Writing Woman, Gianna T. Ward-Vetrano

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis is built on the model of Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook, that is, it is a feminist project of holistic integration that does not reject fracturing, ambiguity, or contradiction, but aims to attain a more complex and thus truer portrait of the woman writing. Lessing’s notebooks examine conflicts between communism and capitalism, racial conflict in Africa, conflict between men and women, and the conflict between the protagonist Anna Wulf’s identity as a woman and her identity as a writer, each of which she then attempts to integrate into the singular golden notebook of the title ...

Il Parco Del Mincio: Un Caso Di Studio Interculturale: Dall’Organizzazione Del Parco E Regolamentazione Del Volontariato Alla Definizione E Creazione Di Un Watershed., Natalie Mcneill

Student Honors Theses By Year

This thesis focuses on the Mincio Park in Mantua, Italy, which uses volunteers to protect the Park and is part of an important watershed. Before going to Mantua, a list of vocabulary and research about the Park and volunteers were compiled to be able to discuss scientific concepts during interviews. Research questions were created to understand how the Park is managed, the motivations of volunteers and administrators, the role of volunteers, and the main environmental problems that the Park faces. Through interviews, the goal of the project was to understand the entire watershed. It became clear during this process, however ...

Contro I Margini: L'Amica Geniale Tra Dimensione Personale E Narrativa, Thera Dal Prà Iversen

Student Honors Theses By Year

This thesis approaches Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Quartet – which consists of the novels My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child – in two different modes. The first chapter concentrates on research that I undertook in Naples during the Winter Break of 2016-17. During that time I visited the areas that Ferrante writes about in the Quartet, and I annotated my bodily and emotional reactions to the Neapolitan environment, which, together with Italian feminist theory, helped me reflect how Naples impacts the main characters. This chapter ...

This research examines a geographical and historical panorama of Italian agriculture, the history of urban agriculture, the phenomenon of urban green zones from the Middle Ages to present day in the city of Bologna, and four urban garden case studies in the Bologna area: a city-owned community garden on 142 Via Saragozza, a preschool in the Giardini Margherita greenhouses, an urban farm in the marginalized Pilastro neighborhood, and an African garden in a refugee welcome center in Crespellano. In all four experiments, urban gardens are tools of socialization and civic collaboration. Through my interviews and observations, I unearthed the environmental ...
