Idealization And Desire In The Hundred Acre Wood: A.A. Milne And Christopher (Robin), Laura E. Bright

Honors Projects Overview

Argues that A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner represent the conscious rejection, unconscious reproduction, and re-imaging of the author's traumatic Victorian childhood.

Editor's Note, James L. Yarnall

Newport History

During the year leading up to her one-hundredth birthday on 3 January 2010, Natalie N. Nicholson compiled a memoir about growing up on Prospect and Paradise Avenues in Middletown. As Nicholson’s longtime friend and as Editor of Newport History, I feel privileged to see this memoir through to publication in this issue of the journal. Dr. John B. Hattendorf has been a moving force behind Newport History for the past twenty-one years. To this issue of the journal, Hattendorf contributes an article revisiting the impact of the closure of Rhode Island’s naval bases at Quonset Point and Newport ...

Ms-115: The Notarangelo Collection Of The Louis A. Parsons Papers, Elizabeth M. Johns

All Finding Aids

The collection was created from two different sets of letters and papers related to Louis A. Parsons, obtained from Thomas Notarangelo in 2008. Notarangelo purchased the papers at auction. Both sets consisted of correspondence of both professional and personal nature; one set consisting of correspondence from Parsons’ life before he became a professor at Gettysburg, and the other focusing mainly around the issue of his dismissal from Gettysburg College in 1925. The entire collection consists primarily of the correspondence written and received by Parsons.

Triangulating A Modernization Experiment: The United States, France And The Making Of The Kossou Project In Central Ivory Coast, Abou B. Bamba 2010 Gettysburg College

Triangulating A Modernization Experiment: The United States, France And The Making Of The Kossou Project In Central Ivory Coast, Abou B. Bamba

History Faculty Publications

Toward the end of the 1960s, authorities in the Ivory Coast decided to build the Kossou Dam, a hydro-electric dam on the Bandama River near the geographic center of the Francophone country. Initially conceived as a technopolitical measure to meet the growing energy demand of the most economically successful country of France's former colonies, the damming experiment soon emerged as a multipurpose regional development project aimed at correcting the regional disparities that tarnished the Ivory Coast's phenomenal economic growth.

This article focuses on the Kossou modernization experience and the sociopolitical transformations that it caused. I argue that the ...

"Heaven's Last, Worst Gift To White Men": The Quadroons Of Antebellum New Orleans, Erin Elizabeth McCullugh 2010 Portland State University

"Heaven's Last, Worst Gift To White Men": The Quadroons Of Antebellum New Orleans, Erin Elizabeth Mccullugh

Dissertations and Theses

Visitors to Antebellum New Orleans rarely failed to comment on the highly visible population of free persons of color, particularly the women. Light, but not white, the women who collectively became known as Quadroons enjoyed a degree of affluence and liberty largely unknown outside of Southeastern Louisiana. The Quadroons of New Orleans, however, suffered from neglect and misrepresentation in nineteenth and twentieth-century accounts.

Historians of slavery and southern black women, for example, have written at length on the sexual experiences of black women and white men. Most of the research, however, centers on the institutionalized rape, victimization, and exploitation of ...

Ii. Dünya Savaşı Yıllarında Almanya'nın Türkiye'ye Baskısı Ve Savaşın İçerisine Çekme Gayretleri/The Compulsion Of Germany On Turkey During The World War Ii And Its Efforts To Draw Turkey Into The War, Osman Akandere, Hasan Ali Polat

Hasan Ali POLAT

Both Axis Powers and Allied Powers tried to draw Turkey into the war during the World War II. Allied Powers struggled so much to include Turkey in their own rank at the beginning of the war. In that period, Germany wanted Turkey to remain impartial. However, Turkey signed Treaty of Triple Alliance with France and England to feel secure so that it aimed to prevent any possible threat from the Allied Powers. During the World War II, Germany declared war against Greece and Yugoslavia on 6 April 1941 and soon arrived at the border of Turkey and Greece after invading ...

The Powerful Mythology Surrounding Bugsy Siegel, Larry Gragg Ph.D. 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

The Powerful Mythology Surrounding Bugsy Siegel, Larry Gragg Ph.D.

Occasional Papers

Journalists, authors, filmmakers, and historians have been interested in Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel for over six decades. Collectively, they have crafted a cohesive mythological narrative of Siegel’s life one focused upon “rags to riches” success and his contributions to the development of Las Vegas, Nevada. Most attribute to Siegel the inspiration for not only the Flamingo Hotel‐Casino, but also for the glamorous, classy, flashy resort city Las Vegas became after World War II. This paper describes the development of the myth since Siegel’s murder in 1947 as well as how it has been sustained.

The Hall Of Fame For Great Americans: Organizational Comatosis Or Hibernation, William N. Thompson, M. Ernita Joaquin

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

The world’s first organization that has been specifically designated as a “Hall of Fame” was established in New York City in 1900. The Hall of Fame for Great Americans honors 102 Americans. It has served as a model for hundreds of other “halls of fame,” the most prominent being baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, established in 1939. While the Hall of Fame for Great Americans remains the original icon in a history of popular culture museums visited by millions each year, the Hall today is little known, visited by scant few, and in a state ...
