Comparison And Contrast Of Eastern And Western Christian Civilizations, 325-1669, Through An Examination Of Two Contemporary Fourteenth Century Representations In The Mariological Cycle, James L. Whittle

Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) Student Scholarship

This paper will examine the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western Christian civilizations, 325-1669, through the examination of two contemporary early fourteenth century interpretations of an episode in the infancy and betrothal narratives of the Mariological cycle. It will use the whole images and details of Giotto's The Betrothal of the Virgin in the Arena Chapel and The Virgin is Entrusted to Joseph in the narthex of Chora Church as lenses to reveal certain characteristics of Eastern and Western societies and the differences between them.

Protestants Protesting Protestantism: 20th Century Experiments In Monasticism, George Faithful 2010 Saint Louis University

Protestants Protesting Protestantism: 20th Century Experiments In Monasticism, George Faithful

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Contrary to popular belief, there have often been monastic sisterhoods and brotherhoods in Protestantism. In Germany, Möllenbeck, Loccum, and Marienberg all contained cloisters that embraced the Lutheran Reformation but retained much of their monastic practice. That such groups are relatively unknown may reflect the ambivalence of those in positions of power toward potential holdovers from Catholicism. Protestant monasticism has never been normative; therefore, its occurrence might best be understood as an implicit critique of the mainstream confessions. For the purposes of this paper I will not define monasticism as a vague and flexible lifestyle of contemplation and asceticism, as have ...

Pensada Lei, Pensada Malícia. A Propósito Das Avaliações "De Desempenho" Aos Docentes, Paulo Ferreira da Cunha 2010 Universidade do Porto

Pensada Lei, Pensada Malícia. A Propósito Das Avaliações "De Desempenho" Aos Docentes, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

There is a widespread ignorance about what does and what it should do a university professor, lecturer or researcher. This will create dangerous myths about how teachers should be evaluated, because paying no attention to the nature of their labor, and resulting on the creation of deep injustice. It is feared that such systems to be implemented result in infinite time-consuming bureaucratic. Precious time that should be used in teaching and research. That may also pollute the environment by creating lethal enemies among teaching people, ending up in lengthy legal proceedings. This article seeks to make a diagnosis of myths ...

Beyond Subversive Institutions: Understanding Categorical Factors Of State Dismemberment In Europe, Glen M.E. Duerr

History and Government Faculty Presentations

As a number of scholars have shown, institutions played a central role in the breakups of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and the Soviet Union in the 1990s. This paper builds on that work to explore in greater depth the variations across their experiences, including sub-cases within the former Yugoslavia, especially in the lens of violence accompanying the breakups. It does so by examining these variables: whether the dismemberment was the result of dissolution or secession, whether it was elite or mass-driven and whether and how it was contested. This paper finds that state dissolution produces more peaceful outcomes than the secession of ...

The Battle Of Murten: The Invasion Of Charles The Bold And The Survival Of The Swiss States, Albert Winkler

All Faculty Publications

When Charles the Bold of Burgundy tried to create a new kingdom between France and the German Empire, he decided to conquer the Swiss states. His aggression started the Burgundian Wars from 1474 to 1477. Charles besieged the fortress of Grandson early in 1476. When the Swiss garrison surrendered, Charles had all four hundred of the defenders hanged. In the Battle of Grandson, the Swiss drove the Burgundian Army away, but Charles soon invaded again. This time he besieged the fortress of Murten, and the Swiss rallied all their forces to attack him. In the subsequent battle, the Swiss infantry ...

Polish Influence On American Synagogue Architecture, Samuel D. Gruber 2010 Syracuse University

Polish Influence On American Synagogue Architecture, Samuel D. Gruber

Religion

Hundreds of thousands of Jews from Poland came to America after 1880. Many built synagogues with details recalling synagogues in their homeland. Immigrant artisans brought motifs and methods of Poland. Many of these synagogues were small, so the relationship to Polish art was on the inside in the painted and carved decoration. Established architects also had access to Polish synagogues as sources. With publication of the Jewish Encyclopedia (1901-06) images of Polish synagogues, such as the Warsaw’s Tlomackie Street Synagogue, became part of many Jewish libraries. More Polish influence came in the 1950s. Most architects were building modern synagogues ...

Crime And Sacred Spaces In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter 2010 Wesleyan University

Crime And Sacred Spaces In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter

Division II Faculty Publications

This principle of intersection between action and sacredness was shared by both Jews and Christians. Both Christian and Jewish religious elites highlighted differences between sacred. In Catholicism, validation of space required a consecration by a bishop in preparation for the ritual of the Eucharist. Church vessels were viewed as sacred in relation to the Eucharist. The Eucharist defined levels of sacredness. The controversy over the nature of the Eucharist during the Reformation, challenged the notion of Christian sacred place. After the Reformation, in the minds of the church, and in Poland increasingly also in the minds of the secular courts ...
