Bloomsbury's Byzantium And The Writing Of Modern Art, Elizabeth Sarah Berkowitz 2018 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Bloomsbury's Byzantium And The Writing Of Modern Art, Elizabeth Sarah Berkowitz

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“Bloomsbury’s Byzantium and the Writing of Modern Art” examines the role of Byzantine art in Bloomsbury art critics Roger Fry’s and Clive Bell’s narratives of aesthetic Modernism. Fry, in his pre-World War I and interwar writings and teachings on art, and Bell, in seminal texts such as Art (1914), have been branded by art historiography as the prime movers in a Formalist, teleological narrative of Modern art still prevalent in textbooks today. Fry’s and Bell’s ideas were later adopted by important Modernist authors and cultural figures, such as Alfred H. Barr, Jr., first director of ...

11, The Three-Faced Representation Of The Holy Trinity, Zoe Goedecke 2018 Portland State University

11, The Three-Faced Representation Of The Holy Trinity, Zoe Goedecke

Kerver Book of Hours: Senior Capstone 2018

In the thirteenth century, artists began depicting the Holy Trinity as a single tricephalic figure, likely in an attempt to convey that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are One. This essay discusses the three-faced image of the Trinity in the Book of Hours and the history of tricephalic imagery in Christian representations, from its early appearances to eventual condemnation by the papacy.

East Meets West: A Comparative Study On The Origin Of Landscape Depiction, Conghao Tian 2018 Bard College

East Meets West: A Comparative Study On The Origin Of Landscape Depiction, Conghao Tian

Senior Projects Spring 2018

This project examines the origin and evolution of landscape depictions from both Eastern and Western traditions, covering from Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) to Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) in China, and from Roman antiquity to early Renaissance in Europe. Landscape depiction from each time period is examined. With the help of detailed visual analysis and overviews of religious ideology, the study reaches the conclusion that in both traditions, landscape depiction reaches its maturity both in terms of pictorial techniques and the ability to convey spirituality by the early Renaissance (11th century in China and 15th century in Italy). The project ...

Gentile Da Fabriano's Adoration Of The Magi: Iconographic Influences Of Decorative Arts From The Islamic World, Ruby Brooke 2018 Bard College

Gentile Da Fabriano's Adoration Of The Magi: Iconographic Influences Of Decorative Arts From The Islamic World, Ruby Brooke

Senior Projects Spring 2018

This project is an exploration of Islamic influences on the Adoration of the Magi (1423) by Gentile da Fabriano. The use of pseudo-inscriptions and Eastern textiles in the painting are central to the investigation of the work. I discuss the contact between the Republic of Florence and Muslim regions and the role of trade, crusades, and political contact on the arts of Quattrocento Florence. I analyze the extent of patron's contributions to the iconography in the altarpiece and the social and political implications of the piece.

Marsilio Ficino's Astral Psychology: The Inner Cosmos Of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese On The Astronomical Ceiling Fresco Of Sala Del Mappamondo At Caprarola, Renata R. Nagy 2018 University of Central Florida

Marsilio Ficino's Astral Psychology: The Inner Cosmos Of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese On The Astronomical Ceiling Fresco Of Sala Del Mappamondo At Caprarola, Renata R. Nagy

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis intends to explore the relationship between the Neoplatonist doctrines of the Renaissance philosopher, Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), and astrological images in the Renaissance. The astrological ceiling fresco located in the Room of Maps in the Villa Farnese at Caprarola is in the center of the argument, which I analyze based on the metaphysical works of Ficino, the Platonic Theology (1482) and the Three Books on Life (1492). Authors have examined the fresco decoration and Ficinian philosophy individually, but never together. This study is the first to recognize Ficino's influence on Renaissance astrological images in its entirety. The present ...

Prosocial Religion And Games: Lost & Found, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber 2018 Rochester Institute of Technology

Prosocial Religion And Games: Lost & Found, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber

Articles

In a time when religious legal systems are discussed without an understanding of history or context, it is more important than ever to help widen the understanding and discourse about the prosocial aspects of religious legal systems throughout history. The Lost & Found (www.lostandfoundthegame.com) game series, targeted for an audience of teens through twentysomethings in formal, learning environments, is designed to teach the prosocial aspects of medieval religious systems—specifically collaboration, cooperation, and the balancing of communal and individual/family needs. Set in Fustat (Old Cairo) in the 12th century, the first two games in the series address laws ...

The Presentation Of The Chasuble To San Ildefonso: An Exploration Of Its Origins, Nikolyn Garner 2018 University of Montana

The Presentation Of The Chasuble To San Ildefonso: An Exploration Of Its Origins, Nikolyn Garner

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Presentation of the Chasuble to San Ildefonso is a 15th-century Spanish altarpiece panel that has been part of the Montana Museum of Art and Culture’s permanent collection since 1957. However, it was donated with little information about the artist who created it, the circumstances of its commission, the area of Spain where it originated, or its provenance from the time of its creation to the time of its donation to the University of Montana. Without research into these questions, this unique piece has not been exhibited as often as it deserves. I have explored these questions ...
