(Un)Doing And (Un)Becoming: Temporality, Subjectivity, And Relationality In Twenty-First-Century German Literature And Film, Simone Pfleger

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how recent German-language literary and cinematic texts depict the interpellation of contemporary subjects under neoliberal capitalism. As I argue, the texts signal, reflect, and comment on the emergence of new types of subjectivities with precarious non-conforming identities, bodily desires, and pleasures struggling to persist under coercive social and economic systems. My core works express a sense of pessimism regarding both the present and future and foreground the ways in which bodies and minds are exposed to normative forces that act on, regulate, and resituate them. As I engage with questions of political agency, subjectivity, performativity, precarity, and ...

Melancholie In Uwe Timms Romanen "Rot" Und "Morenga", Darina Stamova 2018 Washington University in St. Louis

Melancholie In Uwe Timms Romanen "Rot" Und "Morenga", Darina Stamova

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation investigates melancholy in the novels "Rot" and "Morenga" by Uwe Timm presenting major topoi of the melancholic tradition as structuring elements of both novels. The discussion of the melancholic motifs of death, emptiness, philosophy and deficiency of language, building and architecture in the novel "Rot" reveals melancholy as a useful lens for understanding the novel’s reference to prevalent discourses of our time: construction of cultural memory and the Holocaust memory in particular, biological versus social determination, (im)possibility of utopia. But beside the melancholic topoi, another underlying element of the novel is the title color red with ...

Entgrenzung Der Arbeit Durch „Bring Your Own Device“, Leo Roth 2018 College of DuPage

Entgrenzung Der Arbeit Durch „Bring Your Own Device“, Leo Roth

Ernst Blochs Utopischer Nietzsche: Von Der Tragödien- Zur Marxismustheorie, Ursula Beata Baur 2018 Washington University in St. Louis

Ernst Blochs Utopischer Nietzsche: Von Der Tragödien- Zur Marxismustheorie, Ursula Beata Baur

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Science, Mental Illness, And Ethics In Friedrich Dürrenmatt’S The Physicists, Niyant Vora 2018 Illinois Wesleyan University

Science, Mental Illness, And Ethics In Friedrich Dürrenmatt’S The Physicists, Niyant Vora

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

In 1962, as Cold War tensions approached their peak, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, a Swiss playwright, published his play The Physicists. Two of the most important topics in The Physicists are mental illness and ethical responsibility of scientists. Dürrenmatt’s three main characters: Möbius (a genius), Einstein (a Russian spy), and Newton (an American spy) are all physicists who appropriate the status of mentally ill in order to hide from society inside the Les Cerisiers Sanatorium. Their status as mentally ill acts as a cover up that reveals their different reasons for adapting that status–from Möbius attempt to escape the politics ...

A Comparative Analysis Of Martin Luther's Works, Lauren E. Yost, Josh Graham, Peter Kennell, Daniel J. Stank, Joshua Kira, Annis N. Shaver 2018 Cedarville University

A Comparative Analysis Of Martin Luther's Works, Lauren E. Yost, Josh Graham, Peter Kennell, Daniel J. Stank, Joshua Kira, Annis N. Shaver

The Research and Scholarship Symposium

In this study we sought to analyze the inclusion of themes from Martin Luther's 95 Theses (1517) in his later writings and the possible development of such themes. We sought to analyze selected works by Luther in order to answer the following question: Of the themes of the 95 Theses, which remain unchanged, which change, and which disappear in his later writings? After translating and analyzing the 95 Theses as a group, we discussed and agreed upon six themes: purgatory, the pope and the clergy, canonical law, indulgences, the gospel and salvation, and repentance. We then individually compared these ...

La Ciudad Como Espacio De La Marginalidad: Un Acercamiento Crítico A Un Oso Rojo, Mariana Pensa 2018 UCLA Extension

La Ciudad Como Espacio De La Marginalidad: Un Acercamiento Crítico A Un Oso Rojo, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

From Swing King To Swing Kids: The Jazz Era Of ‘Big Band Orchestras’ In World War Ii, Katie Victoria Burnopp 2018 Lynchburg College

From Swing King To Swing Kids: The Jazz Era Of ‘Big Band Orchestras’ In World War Ii, Katie Victoria Burnopp

Student Scholar Showcase

Known as the ‘King of Swing’, clarinetist and band leader Benny Goodman (1909-1986) threatened the Nazi cause during WWII. With intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research was to investigate swing music during World War II. The particular problems of this study were to: (1) identify how the swing music of Benny Goodman (1909-1986) influenced adolescents in the United States of America, United Kingdom, and Germany; (2) explore the Nazi party view on ‘swing’ music of the era; (3) examine how the music of Charlie and his Orchestra became used as a tool for Nazi propaganda; and ...

Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, Molly C. Mata 2018 University of New Mexico

Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, Molly C. Mata

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis explores tragic drama as a corresponding ritual to the incubation ritual in the cult of Asclepius and theorizes that this ritual is psychologically cathartic and healing. I argue that in Ajax and Philoctetes, Sophocles marks this cathartic ritual through nosological language, setting, and social context. In my first chapter, I explore Sophocles’ use of the language of madness (mania) and illness (nosos) in Ajax to show the exacerbation of the audience’s psychological state. Next, I show that catharsis is achieved through the negotiation and subsequent burial of Ajax. In my second chapter, I argue that Sophocles uses ...
