Thematic And Narratological Affinities In George Eliot’S Felix Holt And Theodor Fontane’S Frau Jenny Treibel, Monica Felix 2019 College of DuPage

Thematic And Narratological Affinities In George Eliot’S Felix Holt And Theodor Fontane’S Frau Jenny Treibel, Monica Felix

German Journal Sprache Literatur Kultur

This article investigates affinities in George Eliot’s “Felix Holt: the Radical” and Theodor Fontane’s “Frau Jenny Treibel.” Both texts present suggestive narratological and thematic affinities in how the 19th-century female identity is articulated within the socio-political framework of society novels. This analysis interrogates the boundaries of a ‘sentimental education’ to uncover deeper layers distinguishing Bildung from Herzensbildung, thereby placing greater emphasis on women’s romantic education in the public performance of identity.

“[T]here is no private life which has not been determined by a wider public life... ”

-George Eliot, Felix Holt: The Radical

Nicht Der Rede Wert? Zur Vielfalt Der Deutschen Sprache Im Fach Deutsch Als Fremdsprache, Naomi Shafer 2019 Institut für Mehrsprachigkeit

Nicht Der Rede Wert? Zur Vielfalt Der Deutschen Sprache Im Fach Deutsch Als Fremdsprache, Naomi Shafer

Aspekte Der Psychoanalyse Und Der Subjektivität In Judith Hermanns Erzählung ‘Sonja’, Martha Christine Süß 2019 College of DuPage

Aspekte Der Psychoanalyse Und Der Subjektivität In Judith Hermanns Erzählung ‘Sonja’, Martha Christine Süß

Heine Der Narr: Towards A Universal Freiheitsliebe, Justin William Harris 2019 University of Colorado at Boulder

Heine Der Narr: Towards A Universal Freiheitsliebe, Justin William Harris

Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures Graduate Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will explore Heinrich Heine’s engagement with the political society of the Vormärz period of German literature and society through the perspective of Heine’s conscious construction and perception of Self. By exploring Heine’s method of political engagement, it will contemplate Heine’s self-presentation of a liminal identity as a critical method akin to that of the literary trickster archetype, arguing that Heine has taken on the role of a modernized jester [Narr]. This thesis will further contemplate how this alignment facilitated and effectuated his pursuit of political liberty, as well as his criticism of the socio-political ...

States Of Gewalt: Violence In The Works Of Heinrich Von Kleist, Seth Harmon Thomas 2019 University of Colorado at Boulder

States Of Gewalt: Violence In The Works Of Heinrich Von Kleist, Seth Harmon Thomas

Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures Graduate Theses & Dissertations

The works of Heinrich von Kleist are known for their rich complexity and multifaceted nature, which often defy singular or holistic readings through an employment of paradoxes, impasses, and contradictions. However, despite their high level of plasticity and their inexhaustible nature, his works often touch on two themes: violence and the nation. This thesis will argue that these two themes are inseparably connected, and through readings of Penthesilea, Die Hermannsschlacht, and Michael Kohlhaas it will demonstrate how Kleist uses physical violence to expose latent forms of institutional violence hidden within the power structures of nationality. Through an understanding of the ...

Death, Deportation, Violence, Silence: Refugee Activism Against Precarity In Germany, Emily Jean Frazier-Rath 2019 University of Colorado at Boulder

Death, Deportation, Violence, Silence: Refugee Activism Against Precarity In Germany, Emily Jean Frazier-Rath

Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures Graduate Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, I analyze contemporary activist projects as they are or have been undertaken by refugees in Germany. In so doing, I have begun to build an archive of examples of a particular kind of activism that I conceptualize as refugee activism. I argue that as precariously-situated individuals in German society, refugees have entered a discursive space in which they are viewed as the newest iteration of racialized, non-German “others,” who live at the periphery of German society, and who are constructed as threats to the future of Germany and of Europe. As a result, refugee activists have used ...

Nietzsche And Expressionism: The Neue Mensch In Kafka, Kaiser, And Strauss, Marion Stoll Adams 2019 Bard College

Nietzsche And Expressionism: The Neue Mensch In Kafka, Kaiser, And Strauss, Marion Stoll Adams

Senior Projects Spring 2019

Nietzsche's Übermensch and the Expressionist Neue Mensch are two difficult, cryptic, and contradictory ideas. This project compares the Neue Mensch to the Übermensch through the process of transformation, in hopes of better understanding both concepts. The following chapters are an analysis of Franz Kafka’s short story “Das Urteil”, Georg Kaiser’s play Von morgens bis mitternachts, and Richard Strauss’ opera Salome. Through a side-by-side reading of Expressionist literature and Nietzsche’s Also sprach Zarathustra, we can see how the Expressionists expanded upon, and experimented with, the concept of the Übermensch.

Food Waste In German Households: A Policy Analysis, Carlie Maree Vowell 2019 University of Mississippi

Food Waste In German Households: A Policy Analysis, Carlie Maree Vowell

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the issue of food waste in Germany and proposes policy solutions for food waste in German households. The author analyzes the history and background of sustainability and food waste in Germany in order to recommend a change in policy. The author uses a systematic literature review as the primary method for investigating food waste in Germany. The findings indicate that household food waste occurs due to a lack of planning, misreading food labels, misconceptions about food, improper food storage techniques, and a lack of awareness on the economic and environmental implications of food waste. Moreover, various demographic ...

German Regional Identity And Soccer: Comparison Of Soccer’S Impact On Cultural And Political Identities In Munich And Dortmund, Germany, Megan Degrafft

Honors Theses

This paper aims to explore the relationship between soccer from a regional perspective using FC Bayern Munich and Munich, Germany and Borussia Dortmund and Dortmund, Germany and how those cities’ soccer teams elicit political and regional identities through the dichotomy between the fans and the business mindset of contemporary German soccer. A media analysis using two German language newspapers was used in order to collect articles that reported on the two soccer clubs apart from their result on the field. Pre-existing Twitter hashtags were also used to collect fan reactions towards the reported events. The findings revealed three different crises ...

An Assessment Of Emotional-Force And Cultural Sensitivity The Usage Of English Swearwords By L1 German Speakers, Sarah Dawn Cooper

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This study examines the usage of English swearwords by L1 German speakers and poses the following three questions: (1) Which English swearwords do native-speakers of German use? (2) In which situations do German speakers use English swearwords? Why do they use English swearwords instead of their German counterparts? (3) What emotional weight do they apply to swearwords in English (i.e. How taboo are they)? In an effort to understand Germans’ use of swearwords today, potential attributing factors were assessed and evaluated in a 15-question survey comprised of both qualitative and quantitative components that was taken by 403 participants from ...

The Pariah And The Poet: Hannah Arendt’S Alternative Reading Of Goethe’S «Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre» As A Critique Of Enlightenment «Bildung», John Macready 2018 Collin College

The Pariah And The Poet: Hannah Arendt’S Alternative Reading Of Goethe’S «Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre» As A Critique Of Enlightenment «Bildung», John Macready

John Macready

The German ideal of Bildung—the process of self-development through culture that Goethe dramatized in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre—and its connection to the crises of Jewish emancipation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has been the topic of intense scholarly discussion. At issue is whether Bildung compromised Jewish identity. One of the earliest and strongest critics of Bildung was Hannah Arendt. Although Bildung was seen by many Jewish intellectuals, like Moses Mendelssohn, to be an answer to widespread anti-Judaism in European society, Arendt saw it as an apolitical concept that jeopardized Jewish emancipation in Europe. Arendt was skeptical of the ...

Islamophobie Im Modernen Deutschland, Logan Burum 2018 University of Mary Washington

Islamophobie Im Modernen Deutschland, Logan Burum

Student Research Submissions

For a country terrified of repeating its Nazi past, Islamophobic sentiment and policies are becoming increasingly more popular in modern Germany. This paper explores the some of the historical and cultural underpinnings as well as provides some sociological theories to try and understand just why this type of ideology is festering amongst the German public. Discriminatory practices are veiled under the guise of “living together” and alt-right extremist parties such as the Alternative für Deutschland play to the insecurities of the majority and further support these injustices. As the Muslim minority’s legal rights become increasingly compromised, and human rights ...

Five Poems From Miss Suki, Or America Is Not Far By Utz Rachowski, Louise Stoehr 2018 Stephen F Austin State University

Five Poems From Miss Suki, Or America Is Not Far By Utz Rachowski, Louise Stoehr

Transference

The five short poems selected from Utz Rachowski’s (1954- ) 2013 volume Miss Suki oder Amerika ist nicht weit! mark a shift in his poetic work. His poetry and prose focus almost exclusively on life in the former German Democratic Republic. During the time the GDR existed, his critical poems were cause for his arrest and imprisonment and eventual exile to West Germany. Rachowski has continued to examine his experiences of life under state oppression, including the ramifications of unification. With the 2013 publication of Miss Suki, Rachowski added a new tone of lightness to his writing, which nevertheless remains ...
