Lucie Cousturier: The Female Voice And Travel Narratives In Colonial West Africa, Ashley Gushulak 2017 University of New Mexico

Lucie Cousturier: The Female Voice And Travel Narratives In Colonial West Africa, Ashley Gushulak

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In this thesis, I analyze Lucie Cousturier’s two major works, Des Inconnus chez eux (1920) and Mes Inconnus chez moi (1925) in which she navigates the discourses of imperialism, viewed as masculine, and of femininity. Through strategies of intimacy, Cousturier establishes her authority as a female travel writer. In her first work, Cousturier sets up an intimate relationship with the tirailleurs sénégalais by teaching them French and becoming a mother-figure to them. At the same time, Cousturier plays a role in France’s colonial agenda by teaching the soldiers French. In her second work, she establishes intimacy by adopting ...

Industrial Novels In Perspective Of Industrial Sociology: A Comparison Between Weimar Germany And Post-Wwii Italy, Erik de Gier 2017 Radboud University Nijmegen

Industrial Novels In Perspective Of Industrial Sociology: A Comparison Between Weimar Germany And Post-Wwii Italy, Erik De Gier

Visiting Fellow Working Papers

[Excerpt] Since the English Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, almost up to the present century, the so-called industrial novel played a significant role in many industrializing and industrialized countries in making aware workers, politicians and policy makers, as well as the general public, of the lack of quality of working conditions in separate enterprises and/or sectors. Also, these novels contributed in a positive way to the emancipation of workers in society. Well-known examples are the famous industrial novels of the English Victorian writers Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. But also in other countries the genre of the industrial ...

Aftermath

The question after any disaster is the question of what remains and that, to the extent that there is still something that remains, is the question of life. It is life that is the question after Auschwitz—how go on, how write poetry, how philosophize? What is called thinking after Heidegger? Are we still inclined to thinking, after Heidegger? And what of logic? What of history? And what of science? In addition, we may ask after ethical implications, including questions bearing on anti-Semitism, but also issues of misogyny, as well as Heidegger’s critical questions concerning technology and concerning ...

La Emigración A Norteamérica, La Peregrinación Y La Hospitalidad, Charli Tyree 2017 University of Alabama at Birmingham

La Emigración A Norteamérica, La Peregrinación Y La Hospitalidad, Charli Tyree

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
