Brundibár: Confronting The Misrepresentation Of Resistance In Theresienstadt, Anna Catherine Greer 2013 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Brundibár: Confronting The Misrepresentation Of Resistance In Theresienstadt, Anna Catherine Greer

Masters Theses

Brundibár, a children’s opera written by Czech composer Hans Krása (1899-1944), routinely appears in Holocaust musical scholarship as a depiction of “thriving” Jewish cultural activity during the Holocaust. First performed clandestinely in a Prague orphanage in 1942, the work was ultimately co-opted by Nazi authorities in Theresienstadt. Under the jurisdiction of the Freizeitgestaltung (Leisure Time Activities), the opera came under control of the camp administration and became part of several propaganda schemes, including the 1944 Nazi propaganda film, Der Führer schenkt den Juden eine Stadt (The Führer Gives a City to the Jews). In preparation for the International Red ...

Training For Technical Translators: An Interview With Uwe Muegge, Marta Chereshnovska 2013 SelectedWorks

Training For Technical Translators: An Interview With Uwe Muegge, Marta Chereshnovska

Uwe Muegge

The most important characteristic of a typical technical translation project (if there is such a thing) is that the text to be translated is linked to a product or service, whereas a text in a literary translation project typically stands alone. The fact that there is a strong connection between the source text and a product or service has many implications. First, consistency within and across documents and versions is of the utmost importance throughout the entire process of any technical translation project. For instance, how do you make sure that multiple translators working on multiple text types within a ...

Machine Translation Is As Ready For You As You Are For Mt, Uwe Muegge

Recently, a number of startups – like Asia Online, KantanMT, and SmartMate – have emerged that offer low-cost, subscription-based solutions for creating and using customized SMT engines. These self-service solutions allow the user to submit text for translation to an SMT engine that was customized based on translation memories, glossaries, and other materials that the user submitted. Once a custom engine is in place, which can take less than a day, the user then buys machine translation and possibly other services from the provider.

Adorno On Science And Nihilism, Animals, And Jews, Babette Babich 2012 Fordham University

Adorno On Science And Nihilism, Animals, And Jews, Babette Babich

Babette Babich

No less than Heidegger or Nietzsche, Adorno had his own critical notions of truth/untruth. But Adorno’s readers are unsettled by the barest hint of anything that might be taken to be anti-science. Thus it is argued that Adorno opposes not science but scientism. But, and here not unlike Arendt, Adorno argued that so-called “scientistic” tendencies are the very conditions of society and of scientific thought.” I ask how we are to read Adorno by exploring his thought on animals and nihilism.

Today, almost all product-related translation projects are time sensitive. In the case of life science companies, some documents absolutely must get translated in the shortest amount of time and at the highest possible level of quality to prevent patients coming to harm. In this case study, attendees will learn how CSOFT worked with a medical device manufacturer to develop an integrated workflow that, among other things, eliminated in-country translation review, and resulted in turn-around times of three days or less.

Cloud-Based Translation Memory Tools Are Changing The Way Translators Work And Train, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Cloud-based translation memory systems have been available for more than a decade. Based on recent translation tools surveys and anecdotal evidence, the vast majority of translators continues to use desktop translation software. Despite the fact that cloud-based translation systems offer many advantages over traditional desktop products, including support for multiple linguists working on the same document at the same time and, due to the subscription business model, the need for a dramatically lower initial investment.

Faster Translation, Anyone? Strategies For Reducing Translation Turnaround Time, Uwe Muegge 2012 SelectedWorks

Faster Translation, Anyone? Strategies For Reducing Translation Turnaround Time, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Anyone who has worked long enough on the service provider side of the translation business knows that translation buyers typically only have two types of translation projects: the ones that are urgent and the ones that were due yesterday. As most commercial translation projects are closely linked to the effort of selling a product or service in international markets, the time required for translation can mean lost revenue due to the inability to generate sales in a given market. While many in our industry consider lengthy turnaround times for high-quality human translation a given, there are, in fact, many steps ...

10 Things You Should Know About Automatic Terminology Extraction, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

It is probably safe to say that many, if not most, commercial translation and localization projects today are carried out without a comprehensive, project-specific, up-to-date glossary in place. I suspect that one of the primary reasons for this inefficient state of affairs is the fact that many participants involved in these projects are not familiar with the tools and processes that enable linguists to create monolingual and multilingual glossaries quickly and efficiently. Below are ten valuable insights for linguist who wish to give automatic terminology extraction a(nother) try.

Do you have an Android smartphone or tablet? Are you still waiting for the day when you can finally leave your laptop behind in the office when taking notes during meetings? Don’t you think your next great idea deserves something better than a napkin for jotting it down? I just returned from the first conference where I didn’t lug my laptop to any event and didn’t take any notes on paper. And yet, I have a treasure trove of rich, well-organized, fully searchable electronic notes that I can access from both my laptop and my mobile device.
