Representations Of Immigration In Québécois Film, Roland R. Buchta 2019 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Representations Of Immigration In Québécois Film, Roland R. Buchta

Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Québec is a region where national identity plays a particularly important role, mainly due to its social context, and the historical influence of anglophones on the province’s affairs. This element is reflected in its cinematic productions, as Santoro, Bachand, Desroches and Loiselle stated, “Québec cinema is indeed but the most recent example of the Québécois’ ability to translate their cultural specificity into an enduring and increasingly appreciated source of cultural and economic vitality” (161). Santoro et al further claimed that “Québec cinema is indeed a rich and increasingly diversified art form and has taken its place on the world ...

La Variation De La Morphologie Pronominale Dans Les Variétés Parlées Dans Les Alpes-Maritimes, Robert Mooney 2019 The University of Western Ontario

La Variation De La Morphologie Pronominale Dans Les Variétés Parlées Dans Les Alpes-Maritimes, Robert Mooney

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We examine the pronoun morphology of Occitan dialects in the French Department of Alpes-Maritimes in order to better account for three phenomena that exist in certain Romance varieties: 1) the variable linear orders of clitic pronouns, 2) syncretism and 3) opacity.

We analyse data from the PAM (Parlers des Alpes-Maritimes, Dalbera 1994) in the form of questionnaires that the participant translates from French into his own dialect. We systematically compare the forms of pronouns as well as their linear orders. We compare the approaches proposed to account for these three phenomena in other Romance languages. An approach using morphological models ...

Theater And The Truth: Political And Theatrical Representations Of The 1793 Siege Of Toulon, Chela M. Aufderheide

James Blair Historical Review

The revolutionary period in France was characterized by great upheavals in theater, politics, and political culture, including the new popularity of théâtre d’actualité, or theater based on current events. This théâtre d’actualité offers a unique source with which to examine the interactions between the political and theatrical spheres at this time. To this effect, I used as a case study the 1793 siege of Toulon, in which republican forces recaptured the city after a royalist uprising. The siege and ensuing victory were frequently referenced in political discourse, and also served as the subject matter for a profusion of ...

Intertexts Of The Ecological: Literary Space Revisited In Yanick Lahens's Bain De Lune, Jason Herbeck

Jason Herbeck

The opening lines of Yanick Lahens’s Bain de lune (2014) find an unidentified narrator lying on a beach not far from the coastal community of Anse Bleue, staring at the worn, muddy boots of the man who has just discovered her lifeless body. As her narrative reveals, a hurricane has devastated the region over the past three days, and, in the wake of the storm, the deceased protagonist tries to piece together the fragmented memories of her life as a means of determining how she has ended up dead on the sand. From the very beginning of Lahens’s ...

A Tool For Exemplary Pastoral Care: Three Booklets Of The Edwardes Manuscript In Context, Hannah Weaver 2019 Harvard University

A Tool For Exemplary Pastoral Care: Three Booklets Of The Edwardes Manuscript In Context, Hannah Weaver

Manuscript Studies

As the recent bloom of literary scholarship around manuscripts shows, the longstanding desire to correct and emend their lessons has ceded to an appreciation of what we can learn about medieval reading and writing practices from them. This paper addresses the question of genre through three apparently disparate manuscripts associated with the Augustinian canons at Oxford in the early thirteenth century. United by 1300 into a single codex that was later bound into the larger Edwardes manuscript, Gui de Warewic, La Chanson de Guillaume, and the Pseudo-Turpin Chronicle share a scribe, a lettrine artist, and a concern with acceptable Christian ...

Understanding Proust, Rio Turnbull 2019 Brigham Young University

Understanding Proust, Rio Turnbull

Modernist Short Story Project

French author Marcel Proust was at the forefront of exploring the literary device “stream of consciousness” as its usage began to rise in the early 1900s. He seemed particularly interested in using “stream of consciousness” to delve into memory. What may be the most articulate statement of Proust about his philosophy of memory, according to O’Brien, is as follows: “Yes, if memory, thanks to oblivion, could not contract any link, throw any chain between it and the present minute, if it stayed in its place, on its date, if it kept its distance, its isolation in the hollow of ...

Melancholia, Diaspora, And Madness In Caribbean Women’S Literature, Annaliese Scheer 2019 University of Colorado, Boulder

Melancholia, Diaspora, And Madness In Caribbean Women’S Literature, Annaliese Scheer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) and Myriam Warner-Vieyra’s Juletane (1982), two female protagonists battle with demons that haunt their psyche. As Antoinette and Juletane are forced to define their social and cultural identity, they become increasingly disassociated from the world. Rhys and Warner-Vieyra take conventions of female madness from earlier representations in the century and transpose them to a postcolonial context. Although the two protagonists embody vastly different experiences, they mirror each other’s ultimate refusal to be confined by stereotypical racial and gendered representations of the past. Antoinette and Juletane embody many of the tropes associated ...

Say "Oui" To "We": A Longitudinal Analysis Of Pronouns And Articles In French And English, Colleen Wilkes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Modern English only uses gender in personal, reflexive, and possessive third person singular pronouns. Modern English also does not use gendered articles, which extends to not assigning an arbitrary gender to inanimate objects. This study examines how recent this aspect of grammar is, and to what degree did cultural interaction with the French throughout history influence the use of gendered pronouns. Two written texts in British English (one in Old English, one in Modern English) and one written text in French are analyzed for elements of grammatical gender embedded within articles, pronouns, and possessive adjectives. The geopolitical influences on incorporating ...
