The Spanish Civil War Memory Project consists of over one hundred audiovisual testimonies of victims, militants, survivors, and witnesses of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and Francoist repression (1939-1975). The testimonies were recorded by researchers between 2006 and 2010 as part of an initiative of UC San Diego in collaboration with several human rights associations in Spain, including: the Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica (ARMH), the Asociación de Ex-presos y Represaliados Políticos, and the Federación Estatal de Foros por la Memoria, among others. This article discusses the creation, development, and use of a digital archive of early modern Spanish and colonial Cuban sources from faculty and undergraduate student perspectives. The student authors of this essay include members of a digital team, who researched specific topics and aided in the development of the ePortfolio, and students who piloted the digital archive as a resource for the classroom, including for use in research papers. This article considers a multiple–layered approach to the digital encoding of manuscript and rare print materials related to the colonial period in Latin America. I explain my adoption of this method, describe its technical implementation, and consider its benefits from editorial and pedagogical standpoints. This paper discusses Deciphering Secrets, a large-scale transcription project linked to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to teach Spanish paleography and the SILReST paleography method. It also addresses issues of accuracy, particularly how connecting crowdsourced transcription to class assignments will increase the accuracy of transcriptions and quickly make available to the scholarly community many manuscript transcriptions from the cathedral chapters of Burgos, Plasencia, and Toledo. Students learn more when they play—while the value of play often is emphasized only for those early in their education, play has a role in higher education as well. To teach book history across time and space, I developed two card games: Codex Conquest and Mark. Topics covered included: finding data and using it ethically, digitization, metadata, and tools (Omeka, Curatescape, Mukurtu, Wordpress/Drupal). This article explores how concern about animal welfare and animal rights relates to ecological citizenship by discussing student assignments written about the Dutch Party for Animals or PvdD. ‘Animal welfare’, ‘animal rights’, and ‘ecological citizenship’ perspectives offer insights into strategic choices of eco-representatives and animal rights/welfare advocates as well as educators. The assignments balance animal issues with socio-economic ones, explore the relationship between sustainability and ethics, and attribute responsibility for unsustainable or unethical practices. Analysis of student assignments reveals nuanced positions on the anthropocentrism-ecocentrism continuum, showing students’ ability to critically rethink their place within larger environmental systems. James Hevia’s very accomplished history, Animal Labor and Colonial Warfare, actually contains more than one history. A history of the military’s reliance on nonhuman animal (animal) labour emerges from a history of the administrative procedures of a British colonial regime. Remembering The Huia: Extinction And Nostalgia In A Bird World, Cameron Boyle

This paper examines the role of nostalgia in practices of remembering the Huia, an extinct bird endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand. It suggests that nostalgia for the Huia specifically, and New Zealand's indigenous birds more generally, has occurred as both restorative nostalgia and reflective nostalgia. It argues that the former problematically looks to recreate a past world in which birds flourished.
