Betrayals In Academia And A Black Demon From Ephesus, Suleman Lazarus

Wisdom in Education

The poem is about my PhD experience. The title and parts of the themes are derived from an incident in the Bible (Acts 19:13-20). In order to provide a deeper meaning to my story, I have deployed a biblical allusion which connects with the story of the sons of Sceva, who made unsuccessful attempts to exorcise a man from Ephesus. They failed primarily because they operated not in the spirit but in the flesh.

Three Quarters, Michael McKee Green 2019 Boise State University

Three Quarters, Michael Mckee Green

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Three Quarters makes retrospection into prospection. Following its speaker from the near-present to the near-past, the text imposes a spiritual and affective pilgrimage onto nine months (three quarters of a year) of his life. Codas, pieces of parataxis, and grammatical slippages color and heighten the experiences of a young man coming to terms with himself by reliving what’s come.

Merciless: A Crude Hagiography, Lindsey Ann Klessens Appell

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is the culmination of a project that began as an attempt to explore my relationship, as a teenager, with the Main Street of my hometown, Roundup, MT. In the process of looking through the Roundup Record-Tribune archives and revisiting adolescent memories, I began to see connective tissue between the autobiographical aspects of this documentary project and the work I had been doing in reclaiming, repurposing, and “translating” folklore and mythology in my poetry. Coming out of classes in Old English and translation theory, I had also developed an interest in experimental and creative translation of early medieval texts ...

Sacred Lucidity: Embodied Identity Through The Lens Of Poetry, Abby Laporte 2019 Dominican University of California

Sacred Lucidity: Embodied Identity Through The Lens Of Poetry, Abby Laporte

Senior Theses and Capstone Projects

Social location and personal identity must be explored through the art of poetry, in conjunction with academic analysis. In a 28-page poetry chapbook and nine-page analytical essay, "Sacred Lucidity" provides a deep examination of social justice and radical personal healing. The introductory essay takes a close look at "Mirror" by Sylvia Plath, "in salem" by Lucille Clifton, and two poems from "milk and honey" by Rupi Kaur, all in relation to their societal impact in demographic identification and harsh truths of trauma in personal histories. This thesis explores the human condition and specifics of self, while taking on philosophical themes ...
