The Heart Is A Strange Muscle, Laura Browder

English Faculty Publications

Rachel’s beeper went off just as her back began growing numb, jammed against the pieces of broken and discarded furniture in the storage room. A second later, Bobby’s went off too. She unwrapped her legs from around his sweaty back, pulled herself up to a sitting position, and groped through the jumble of clothing.

“The Base, Cursed Thing”: Panther Attacks, Ecotones, And Antebellum American Fiction, Matthew Sivils 2010 Iowa State University

“The Base, Cursed Thing”: Panther Attacks, Ecotones, And Antebellum American Fiction, Matthew Sivils

English Publications

The panther attack scenes found in the fiction of Charles Brockden Brown (1771-1810), James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), and Harriet Prescott Spofford (1835-1921) portray these animals as literary monsters indicative of a developing American environmental anxiety. Drawing on a selection of recent critical studies dealing with both antebellum American fiction and ecocriticism, I suggest that these scenes reveal, especially through their depiction of panther attacks in what ecologists now refer to as anthropogenic ecotones (human-made environmental edges), the beginnings of an American cultural recognition of environmental degradation. Ultimately these panther attack scenes prefigure an American environmental ethic, revealing an instructive early ...

On Being Human And Other Afflictions, James Roger Weaver 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

On Being Human And Other Afflictions, James Roger Weaver

Curtis Laws Wilson Library Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Note from the Author: Writing has been a way for me to process emotions. I wrote the poems in this collection in the early 90's which was a trans-formative period in my life. Current friends are surprised at the dark nature of this collection because they do not reflect the person I am now. One must travel through the darkness to recognize the light. I hope readers can find some meaning in them. I hope you enjoy the poetry. I ask you to take notice of the Creative Commons license. This license allows you to download my poetry ...

Shifting Concepts Of The "Other" In Modern Science Fiction, Robert Hunter 2010 University of Redlands

Shifting Concepts Of The "Other" In Modern Science Fiction, Robert Hunter

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper explores gender and power relationships between self and Other in science fiction using a two-pronged approach. First the author uses a respected, established text in the science fiction genre, Frank Herbert's Dune, in order to show that when looked at with a critical eye it contains aspects that are colonialist in nature, especially with regards to the portrayal of the Fremen - the natives of the planet Arrakis and the way female identities are constructed in the Dune universe with an emphasis on the character of lady Jessica. Second, using the themes explored in Dune as a jumping ...
