性別話語的反動——探析李清照〈論詞〉的女性特質, Kit Ming Sung 2018 Hong Kong Baptist University

性別話語的反動——探析李清照〈論詞〉的女性特質, Kit Ming Sung

Library Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research

Terrorist Vs. Freedom Fighter: Uyghurs And The Colonial Legacy In Contemporary Xinjiang, Rachel Hale 2018 Connecticut College

Terrorist Vs. Freedom Fighter: Uyghurs And The Colonial Legacy In Contemporary Xinjiang, Rachel Hale

History Honors Papers

After former President George W. Bush declared the “war on terror” in 2001 its repercussions extended further than the Middle East into China’s northwest region of Xinjiang where the Uyghurs, a Muslim Chinese ethnic minority have lived for thousands of years. Uyghurs’ have long declared themselves ethnically separate from the Chinese people and therefore should remain politically and nationally independent from the Chinese nation. Conversely, the CCP’s contesting narrative shows the Uyghurs as always being a part of China, and therefore any independence movements are a threat to Chinese unity and national security.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP ...

Differing Perspectives: Positive Accounts Of The Down To The Countryside Movement, Michael Nettina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the number of narratives regarding the negative outcomes and experiences of the Down to the Countryside Movement during the Cultural Revolution, there is a scarce amount of literature in the West regarding the fringe benefits of the movement. The historiography in the field is limited, with most Western writers only focusing on the unfortunate consequences of the movement, such as violence, rape, limited access to education, and the strain on families affected by the political movement. The purpose of this study is to give a voice to the Chinese sent-down youth whose positive thoughts on the Down to the ...

Determinism And The Problem Of Individual Freedom In Li Zehou’S Thought, Andrew Lambert 2018 City University of New York (CUNY)

Determinism And The Problem Of Individual Freedom In Li Zehou’S Thought, Andrew Lambert

Publications and Research

Li Zehou’s work can be understood as an account of a Chinese modernity, a vision for Chinese society that seeks to integrate three distinct philosophical approaches. These are Chinese history and culture, which Li understands as largely Confucian; Marxism, which has exerted such influence on a modernizing China; and Western learning more generally, as expressed by figures such as Immanuel Kant and Sigmund Freud. Li also frequently expresses the hope that a Chinese modernity will be one in which the importance of the individual is recognized, and rights and freedoms upheld (e.g., 2006, p. 182). But this stance ...

Seeing Witchcraft, Bernhard Udelhoven 2017 Society of the Missionaries of Africa

Seeing Witchcraft, Bernhard Udelhoven

Journal of Global Catholicism

When Christians in Zambia struggle with witchcraft, they also struggle with African cultural and religious concepts that deal with life’s ambiguities and that require discernment. It is not by working against the cultural and religious heritage, but by working with it, as far as possible, that the pastor can identify the broken relationships towards which many witchcraft discourses point. However, before we place the concepts of witchcraft into the realm of superstition (as are the trends of mission Christianity) or the demonic (as are the trends of charismatic Christianity), the Church has the duty to look at the concepts ...

The Chinese had access to poppy before the EITC began importing it, and when China levied a ban on opium being imported China, the EITC ignored it and continued to profit off China’s opium addiction. The EITC, and Britain, saw the ban, and the actions taken by China to enforce the ban, as an act of war and reacted ...
