Text Mining In Chinese Ancient Attires, Lu Wang 2018 Western University

Text Mining In Chinese Ancient Attires, Lu Wang

Western Research Forum

Starting from the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE) when writing system appeared in China, clothing was recorded as symbols to denote social statuses. The hierarchical signification of clothing remained in the following dynasties until the end of imperial China in 1911. The imperial period produced twenty-five official dynastic histories with rich corpuses on the subject of attire, documenting regulations and prohibitions of detailed dress code, a subject being scarcely studied and treated with assumptions today. This research will use text mining tools to identify descriptive words of clothing that reflect Chinese hierarchal ideology from the twenty-five histories. The method is to ...

Míng (名) As “Names” Rather Than “Words:” Disabled Bodies Speaking Without Acting In Early Chinese Texts, Jane Geaney

My first scholarly article was about the work of A. C. Graham. Unfortunately, I never met him but my copies of his books became so worn from over-use that I had to replace them. My second, now equally worn, copy of Later Mohist Logic, Ethics, and Science opens to a statement that inspires my work:

A consistent nominalism has to extend its principle to the particular utterances of the name itself; I pronounce the sound ‘stone’ over X and afterwards convey that Y is like X by pronouncing a similar sound.

This claim has two important implications. First, in early ...

What Drives Consumers In China To Buy Clothing Online? Application Of The Technology Acceptance Model, Zhenqian Wei, Min-Young Lee, Hong Shen

Retailing and Tourism Management Faculty Publications

An enormous number of Internet users have made China a profitable e-commerce marketplace, and clothing is one of the most frequently purchased items. This study explores the predictors of consumers’ motivation to buy clothing online in China by extending the technology acceptance model. Data were collected via an online questionnaire, resulting in 504 returned responses. The results indicate that perceived usefulness has a significant effect on consumers’ intention to buy clothing online; however, no direct relationship between perceived ease of use and buying intention was found. Furthermore, perceived convenience, perceived money saving, and perceived time-saving can explain why consumers perceive ...

Succor In Smoke: A Historical And Comparative Analysis Of Incense And Moxibustion As Similar Agents Of Edification And Self-Cultivation, Hannah E. Matulek

Black & Gold

Since its origins in the Shang Dynasty nearly 3,000 years ago, traditional Chinese medicine has undergone many dramatic shifts and adapted to a wide range of cultural, social, religious and foreign pressures. One of the most notable changes is the attribution of the etiology of disease (as well as general poor health and behaviors) from volatile and dissatisfied external forces to manageable internal forces. This allowed for a flourishing of thought in Chinese medicine, for once granting an individual the power to influence his or her own health. Three religions—Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism—were also introduced to China ...

Xu Zhen & Madein Company: The Phenomenon Of Artist-Company, Qianfan Gu

School of Arts & Sciences Theses

The thesis is about the phenomenon of "artist-company" -- commercial methodologies employed by contemporary artists are determining their artworks. Taking XuZhen as a case study, it attempts to understand the phenomenon through aspects including art autonomy and institutional theories. It argues that "artist-company" is a continuation of institutional critique.

Constitutional Mobilization, Bui Ngoc Son 2018 Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Asian Legal Studies, National University of Singapore Faculty of Law

Constitutional Mobilization, Bui Ngoc Son

Washington University Global Studies Law Review

People around the world are mobilizing for constitutional change. This global phenomenon has been underexplored in comparative constitutional studies. This Article introduces the concept of constitutional mobilization, theorizes about it, and offers an original, empirical case-study.

First, it develops a general theoretical framework defined by the following key concepts. Constitutional mobilization is the process by which social actors employ constitutional norms and discourses to advocate for constitutional change. Constitutional opportunity refers to the general political and constitutional environment in which constitutional mobilization operates, and particular political and constitutional processes that provoke constitutional mobilization. Constitutional framing concerns identifying constitutional problems and ...

Modern Evolution Of The Chinese Bond Market, Chirag D. Manyapu 2018 University of Pennsylvania

Modern Evolution Of The Chinese Bond Market, Chirag D. Manyapu

Wharton Research Scholars

This paper examines the evolution of the Chinese bond market from its conception to present day with a primary emphasis on current reforms. China has had immense growth since it first implemented its liberalization policies in the 1970s, but in order to sustain this growth the country has to continually find new ways to develop capital. China’s financial system is relatively obscure with not much data or public information out there and especially with regard to the country’s relatively newer bond market. That being said there have been significant changes in China’s economic policies in recent years ...

Determinism And The Problem Of Individual Freedom In Li Zehou’S Thought, Andrew Lambert 2018 City University of New York (CUNY)

Determinism And The Problem Of Individual Freedom In Li Zehou’S Thought, Andrew Lambert

Publications and Research

Li Zehou’s work can be understood as an account of a Chinese modernity, a vision for Chinese society that seeks to integrate three distinct philosophical approaches. These are Chinese history and culture, which Li understands as largely Confucian; Marxism, which has exerted such influence on a modernizing China; and Western learning more generally, as expressed by figures such as Immanuel Kant and Sigmund Freud. Li also frequently expresses the hope that a Chinese modernity will be one in which the importance of the individual is recognized, and rights and freedoms upheld (e.g., 2006, p. 182). But this stance ...

Wan Ting WONG 2018 Lingnan University

Wan Ting Wong

Dissertations from all years

Wai Yan LEE 2018 Lingnan University

Wai Yan Lee

Dissertations from all years

Lok Tung CHOI 2018 Lingnan University

Lok Tung Choi

Dissertations from all years

Yuk Heng CHOI 2018 Lingnan University

Yuk Heng Choi

Dissertations from all years

Wai Yi LEE 2018 Lingnan University

Wai Yi Lee

Dissertations from all years

Yuen Yan HUI 2018 Lingnan University

Yuen Yan Hui

Dissertations from all years
