Universe Of Things: A Human Presentation Of Food-For-Thought., Madeline Halpern 2019 Washington University in St. Louis

Universe Of Things: A Human Presentation Of Food-For-Thought., Madeline Halpern

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

I present this statement under three loose categories: People, Objects and their Environment. I consider People as human, Objects as art objects, domestic objects, and food, and Environment as the shared space of the former groups. Food directs this statement as I present each concept and creative process as a metaphorical dish. Material exploration carried me from a direct practice of reorienting acrylic paint and questioning object functionality through personified sculptures into theoretical thesis work in which I use interpersonal relations and the idea of consumption to translate tactile, gustatory and olfactory sensations into digital film. In this meal I ...

Auditory Spaces And Sonic Narratives Of Gender: The Queer Phenomenology Of Sound In Girls Lost And Tangerine, Mira Vuorinen 2019 Graduate Center, City University of New York

Auditory Spaces And Sonic Narratives Of Gender: The Queer Phenomenology Of Sound In Girls Lost And Tangerine, Mira Vuorinen

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis explores the phenomenological aspects of sound in the Swedish film Girls Lost (2015) and the American film Tangerine (2015), which are both stories of transgender identities. The thesis considers sound through its affective characteristics and materiality in the films; that sound has an agency in a story-telling and that sounds actively create the world and spaces the characters and the listener-viewer inhabit. By utilizing Sara Ahmed’s queer phenomenology as a theoretical lens and bringing it together with phenomenology of sound, the thesis focuses on what is in the background and usually left behind in film analysis of ...

1999 Aaa Jrpg Quality And How A 2019 Indie-Game Developer Can Meet It, Kailynn Haskell-Harbert 2019 California State University, Monterey Bay

1999 Aaa Jrpg Quality And How A 2019 Indie-Game Developer Can Meet It, Kailynn Haskell-Harbert

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper is a delve into 1999 JRPG AAA video games and how small developers can make something of similar quality with contemporary technology. This is explored by using Final Fantasy VIII and Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete as a 1999 AAA standard, then comparing that standard to modern indie-games as well as my own experience in indie-game development. The ultimate goal of the paper is to prove that small indie-game studios can create 1999 AAA quality JRPGs with relatively minimal investment.

Cinematic Meditations, Dakota Nanton 2019 University of Colorado, Boulder

Cinematic Meditations, Dakota Nanton

Art Practices MFA Theses

The cinematic experience is a sort of ritualistic ceremony between the audience and the projected image. Audiences come into the cinematic space with a set intention (often simply the desire to be entertained) but the filmic experience can also inadvertently and deliberately access and engage other states of being including the liminal, the unconscious, and the sublime. Through both research and my filmmaking practice I am exploring ways in which cinema can be used as a tool to create meditative and introspective experiences for the audience. In this written paper I discuss my own intentions as a filmmaker, previous works ...

The Physio-Emotional Effects Of Audio In The Global Christian Church, Evelyn Hanks 2019 Liberty University

The Physio-Emotional Effects Of Audio In The Global Christian Church, Evelyn Hanks

Senior Honors Theses

Audio, specifically as researched by the film industry specialists, has physical and emotional effects on those exposed to it. These effects follow from manipulation of sound’s characteristics in specific and measurable ways. The responsibility of the Christian is to share the gospel with others and support the kingdom of God with his or her skills. In light of these truths, Christian audio specialists should have a thorough knowledge of the physio-emotional effects of audio. Further, they should not shy away from applying strategies from secular audio research to benefit local churches across the globe.

The Russian Five, Austin M. Doub 2019 Cedarville University

The Russian Five, Austin M. Doub

The Research and Scholarship Symposium

This paper explores Russian culture beginning in the mid nineteenth-century as the leading group of composers and musicians known as the Moguchaya Kuchka, or The Russian Five, sought to influence Russian culture and develop a pure school of Russian music amidst rampant Westernization. Comprised of César Cui, Aleksandr Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimksy-Korsakov, this group of inspired musicians, steeped in Russian society, worked to remove outside cultural influences and create a uniquely Russian sound in their compositions. Under the progressive reign of Tsar Peter the Great and the subsequent leadership of Tsar Peter the great, the nation ...

Serial, Season Three: From Feeling To Structure, Jason Loviglio 2019 University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Serial, Season Three: From Feeling To Structure, Jason Loviglio

RadioDoc Review

From the start, host and reporter Sarah Koenig presents the 2018 season of Serial as a corrective to the universe-in-a-grain-of-sand approach typical of earlier seasons and much of the work of This American Life, from which Serial spun off. In a thematic departure, Koenig sets out to tell the story of structures, rather than merely structure a story. The first character is a “cluster of concrete towers” in downtown Cleveland, called the Justice Center, a name we’ll quickly come to understand as ironic, if not Orwellian. Host Sarah Koenig describes the structure as “hideous but practical”. Koenig and company ...

Diy In Early Live Electroacoustic Music: John Cage, Gordon Mumma, David Tudor, And The Migration Of Live Electronics From The Studio To Performance, Lindsey Elizabeth Hartman 2019 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Diy In Early Live Electroacoustic Music: John Cage, Gordon Mumma, David Tudor, And The Migration Of Live Electronics From The Studio To Performance, Lindsey Elizabeth Hartman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research examines early live electronic works by Gordon Mumma, David Tudor, and John Cage—three influential American experimental music composers who designed, built, and recontextualized electronics for live performance—and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) aesthetic embodied by their instruments and the compositions written for them. This dissertation serves as a presentation of original research into the earliest composers of live electronic works and the necessary DIY approach used in building independent systems. Previous research on the DIY perspectives in music often touch on the grass-roots nature of contemporary electroacoustic systems but there is not yet research specific to the DIY ...

Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction, Kathleen Spring 2019 Linfield College

Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction, Kathleen Spring

Faculty & Staff Publications

Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction stems from work conducted during a sabbatical in fall 2017. The audio piece, Shush Me Awake, is a composition that explores the shush as a performative act. The accompanying framing essay uses an autoethnographic approach to provide a contextualized look at the composition process for this piece, while simultaneously situating it within existing scholarship in library and information studies on the image of the librarian and stereotypes. The composer notes provide additional technical details about the audio piece itself.

Skweeel : Towards A Method For Music Production With An Automated Large-Format Analogue Audio Mixing Console Used As A Sound-Generating Device Through Controlled Larsen Effects, Philippe Chambin 2019 Southern Cross University

Skweeel : Towards A Method For Music Production With An Automated Large-Format Analogue Audio Mixing Console Used As A Sound-Generating Device Through Controlled Larsen Effects, Philippe Chambin

Theses

Large-format analogue consoles such as the Neve VR, VX and 88R, or the Solid State Logic SL 4000 G and XL 9000 K, are being relegated to history in all but the orchestral recording market. In studios around the planet, they are being replaced by more affordable all-digital solutions or much smaller format analogue "front-end" consoles.

Since the early 20th century, electronic musicians and producers have been striving for new sounds which set them apart from other artists. The variety of tones that can emerge from a console within a normal recording or mixing session, due to accidental feedback loops ...

Failure As Liberation: A Critical Analysis Of Rilo Chmielorz’ Artistic Feature “Scheitern Ist. Eine Bestandsaufnahme” (Failure Is. An Inventory), Ania Mauruschat 2018 University of Basel, Switzerland

Failure As Liberation: A Critical Analysis Of Rilo Chmielorz’ Artistic Feature “Scheitern Ist. Eine Bestandsaufnahme” (Failure Is. An Inventory), Ania Mauruschat

RadioDoc Review

This essay is a critical analysis, interpretation and assessment of the feature “Scheitern ist. Eine Bestandsaufnahme”(2016), by the German artist Rilo Chmielorz, which explores failure as a taboo subject in neoliberal societies that worship the ideology of success and progress.

This study deconstructs this unique feature to its various parts and looks at the feature as a whole in terms of the concept of “polyphonic narration” that the Russian literature and art scholar and theorist Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) derived from the poetics of the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881). It shows how the level of content (life stories of ...

Pillow, Talk: Kaitlin Prest’S The Shadows And The Elements Of Modern Audio Fiction, Neil Verma 2018 Northwestern University, Chicago

Pillow, Talk: Kaitlin Prest’S The Shadows And The Elements Of Modern Audio Fiction, Neil Verma

RadioDoc Review

This essay is a study of The Shadows (2018), a series produced by Kaitlin Prest and Phoebe Wang for CBC Podcasts. I situate the work in the framework of Prest’s career after her podcast The Heart, and argue that The Shadows crystallises a set of conventions about “audio fiction” that set it apart from “audio drama,” “radio features” and other similar forms, at least at this particular historical moment. These conventions include: the embrace of naive themes; a preference for retroversion or 'queer temporality'; a focus on body sound; multiplication in mixing and editing that comes across as a ...

Listening To Our Inner Breath: The Acoustic Architecture Of Avec Le Vent (With The Wind), Laura Romero 2018 University of Wollongong

Listening To Our Inner Breath: The Acoustic Architecture Of Avec Le Vent (With The Wind), Laura Romero

RadioDoc Review

Avec Le Vent (With the Wind) is a radio art composition directed, edited and mixed by Jeanne Debarsy, about the story of exile and memories of three Armenian people living in Brussels and Paris. This review is an attempt to describe how the author breaks with verbal discourse to create an experience of transportation for listeners, through the musical use of layers of breaths coming from the characters and the sound effects caused by instruments of wind, such as the duduk, a potent symbol of Armenia. It is a poetic approach to the experience of uprooting and the need to ...

Moving, Belonging, And Sorrow In ‘A Very Different Time’ By Phil Smith, Silvia Viñas

RadioDoc Review

Phil Smith’s A Very Different Time weaves poetry, music, ambience and snapshots of stories in an audio piece about movement, nostalgia, change and sorrow. It includes the voices of people he met while living in Berlin: a West African refugee; a musician and academic from the United States; a Syrian refugee escaping war; an academic of Italian/German citizenship; and a German musician who moved from a small town to the city. To this stream of voices, Smith adds layers of music, different beats, street sounds, distortion, the ambience that recall the words – valleys, mountains, water and islands –and ...

Intimate Moments: Dispelling The Cancer Myth With Real Life - Summer Rain By Nanna Hauge Kristensen., Sophie Townsend 2018 Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Intimate Moments: Dispelling The Cancer Myth With Real Life - Summer Rain By Nanna Hauge Kristensen., Sophie Townsend

RadioDoc Review

Nanna Hauge Kristensen’s Summer Rain is a small piece in length and in scope. It is intimate, almost fragmentary. It is simply a story of a woman, who is a mother, and a daughter, and who has cancer; a woman undergoing treatment, and raising her child, and dealing with the ramifications of what cancer treatment means. An anthropologist by training, Kristensen’s observational, almost distanced approach style, allows us to glimpse her life, but also to feel it. There is something very empirical about what she’s doing in this piece, and she allows us no room to pretend ...

“Qualia”: The Subjective Qualities Of Sound As Experience Of The Self, Vanessa Ribeiro Rodrigues 2018 Universidade Lusófona do Porto

“Qualia”: The Subjective Qualities Of Sound As Experience Of The Self, Vanessa Ribeiro Rodrigues

RadioDoc Review

How do we construct the perception of the world and Others through sounds? How are we able to express the myriad of feelings inside ourselves into an intelligible structure in order to be understood? What is the amount of interference in the way we express those [translated] feelings? These are some of the subtle questions raised by “Qualia”, a five-episode radio feature by Spanish artist and performer Charo Calvo, aired in 2016 by ABC Radio National’s Soundproof show in Australia.

The name “Qualia” evokes the philosophical theory of an internal and subjective component of sense and mental perceptions, which ...
