Masters Theses

The Influence of Graphic Design and Fine Art in Film is a exploration into the impact that an investment of the arts has on film and more specifically the independent film market. Most independent filmmakers have to develop their productions with little to no budget. In doing so they must work to create a marketable film to the best of their ability. There in-lies the issue; they are doing it to the best of “their” ability. The issue that is in focus with the notion of ability is that a major component that is left out of the equation to ...

Spaces In, Outside Of, And Between, Michelle Peterein 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

Spaces In, Outside Of, And Between, Michelle Peterein

Theses and Dissertations

My practice involves leveraging analog and digital techniques from many disciplines, but especially graphic design, craft/material studies, and sculpture. I embrace reproduction and repetition as both tools and means to visualize what is often unseen, and to recognize not only what is made, but what supports making— from the straightforward and immediate to the complex and conceptual.

The What If Collection, Aisha J. Daniels 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

The What If Collection, Aisha J. Daniels

Theses and Dissertations

The What If Collection is a visual narrative that confronts white supremacy, the social, economic, and political ideology used to subjugate black civilization via colonial rule and enslavement in history and via structural racism today. Many white people have been socialized into a racial illiteracy that fosters white supremacy. This racial illiteracy fails to realize and understand the destructive effects of Western dominance on the rest of the world, particularly on past and present Africa and her diaspora. In response, utilizing discursive design, the collection constructs a counter-story that depicts a shift in the power structure in which the white ...

The Day Is Just Another Surface, Brooks M. Heintzelman 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

The Day Is Just Another Surface, Brooks M. Heintzelman

Theses and Dissertations

Within a practice founded on both typographic form and language, I have continued to push myself to make work that is more sensitive to place, more contextual, more (hopefully) generous toward a public audience. These pieces might serve as useful instruments of institutional critique, resources for comprehension, or moments in which to interrogate preconceived modes of seeing. I deploy original texts in public spaces in order that they might force viewers to decide how to personally resolve the content they encounter. Is it language or object? Literal or figurative? Graphic design or art? The further I develop this body of ...

A Thesis Is A Product Is A Tracking, Yixue Li 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

A Thesis Is A Product Is A Tracking, Yixue Li

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, I discuss how global products/ identities are made, transported and consumed, and the inevitable ‘mis-’ in acts of transmission. This research ranges from the miscommunication in languages and linguistics, to the gap between production and consumption. I investigate how things and humans are misread, mispronounced, misfit and mistranslated when they traverse social and cultural borders, arriving at a place in between languages, holding on to and letting go of things that are familiar to neither and both cultures. This work explores diverse media such as publications, videos and installations, and examines how they maybe used to address ...

The Art Of Lettering, Amanda Cerutti 2019 University of Iowa

The Art Of Lettering, Amanda Cerutti

Honors Theses at the University of Iowa

The subject of my research project is learning how to hand letter. As a graphic designer, I have always had an interest in learning how to incorporate this skill into my work. I often find myself using script fonts, rather than creating my own. I think it is important to explore new skills and work outside of my comfort zone, which is very digital. Compared to script fonts, hand lettering is very unique and personable, something that cannot easily be digitally recreated. For this research project I will be studying the difference between hand lettering and calligraphy, then applying the ...

Memories Of Wuhan, Kun Zhou

Honors Theses at the University of Iowa

With the development of globalization, more and more cultures blend together. Perhaps because of this, nowadays many foreign artists advocate their native styles. As a Chinese student, who enjoys designing projects with visual meanings, I decide to make a series of 12 postcards, illustrating famous architectures in my hometown, Wuhan. I’m looking forward to practicing the skill of transferring sketches to digital forms fluently.

I was born and raised in Wuhan, China for 20 years, and would like to share images of my home and myself. I choose to draw famous architectures in Wuhan because I enjoy the design ...
