Mental Sensorium, Brittany Adkins 2019 Kennesaw State University

Mental Sensorium, Brittany Adkins

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

According to ADAA, nearly one-half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable but only 36.9% are receiving any kind of treatment. Anxiety disorders develop based on a set of factors including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. Many do not realize but our environment, especially the built environment we inhabit every day can have a positive or negative effect on our mental well-being. Architecture should not just focus on the physical needs of their inhabitants but the mental health needs as well.

The built environment has a considerable ...

Sustainable Reuse: The Adaptive Reuse Of The Chattanooga Choo Choo Into The Chattanooga Market Using Leed, Ashley DeGennaro 2019 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Sustainable Reuse: The Adaptive Reuse Of The Chattanooga Choo Choo Into The Chattanooga Market Using Leed, Ashley Degennaro

Honors Theses

Buildings account for a significant percentage of energy use, material consumption, and waste production. This study argues that a solution for this issue is the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Research shows that reusing existing buildings for new design projects helps to decrease the amount of energy consumed and waste produced. When adapting historic buildings specifically, the cultural significance within the community is maintained (Department of the Environment and Heritage, 2004). Sustainability has often been seen as more difficult when adapting historic buildings due to the importance of protecting the historical character and design of the building (Polo Lopez & Frontini ...

Empowering Women Through The Design Of Domestic Violence Shelters, Alexa Keim 2019 Kansas State University Libraries

Empowering Women Through The Design Of Domestic Violence Shelters, Alexa Keim

Kansas State University Undergraduate Research Conference

According to a report published by The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey in 2017, one in four women are sexually assaulted, physically assaulted and/or stalked by an intimate partner. According to the same survey, these women feel fearful, unsafe and show symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Supportive housing, in the form of domestic violence shelters, provide these women with a physical environment to combat their situation and to promote their future independence (Pable, 2013, p. 269; Phenice, L. & Griffore, R., 2013). Environmental factors can have an impact on women's psychological sense of safety in this time of transition (Mills, 1996, p. 263; Wells, 2007, p. 75; Pable, 2012, p. 9). The environment also plays a role in the perception of connection ...

Building Homes And Hopes In Bangalore, India, Sherry S. Saroufeem

Construction Management

Habitat for Humanity Global Village is an organization that continuously sends volunteers to work on construction projects around the world. My team and I were chosen to go to a village in Bangalore, India, where we dug and poured home foundations for three families in need. Given the opportunity to combine my love for construction and my passion for helping those in need, I was certain that this was the senior project for me. I wanted the capstone of my college educational experience to reflect a hands-on approach, where I had the opportunity to make a difference and see an ...

Bantaba: Designing The Sacred Circle, Tashiara Scott 2019 Ms.

Bantaba: Designing The Sacred Circle, Tashiara Scott

Theses and Dissertations

MOTIVATION In Richmond, there are 1.21 times as many African Americans as any other ethnic group. Yet 63.4% of African Americans live in poverty (Richmond, VA). African Americans face greater exposure to stress due to low socioeconomic status and poverty. In these communities, “discrimination and deprivation undermine individuals’ ability to accumulate the social and material resources to mitigate the effects of stress” (Brondolo, 2018). In this city’s African American community, where stress levels are high and consequential health concerns are prevalent, dance can be a remedy for managing stress and improving health (Hanna, 2006).

Erasure: An Additive And Subtractive Act, Margaret Davids 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

Erasure: An Additive And Subtractive Act, Margaret Davids

Theses and Dissertations

MOTIVATION In the simplest form, a pencil mark on a page is removed by a traditional rubber eraser. However, the marks are often never fully removed, and the paper thins with each attempt to rub out an old idea.

But how does one erase a chair? A pilaster? A room? A building?... More importantly, how does the subtractive act of erasing become an additive one?

The historical fabric of a building is important; it is also imperative that it does not remain stagnant. Erasing is an opportunity to design an interior environment that both acknowledges the traces of the pencil ...

The Wheel House - An Intergenerational Space Creating Bonds Between At-Risk Teens And Seniors, Jessica M. Keegan 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

The Wheel House - An Intergenerational Space Creating Bonds Between At-Risk Teens And Seniors, Jessica M. Keegan

Theses and Dissertations

MOTIVATION

Two main groups in American society today are floundering: adolescent children of low income families and the elderly.

Between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 p.m., one in five children are unsupervised. Left to their own devices, many become involved in negative behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse, sexual activity or in the worse cases, delinquency (Afterschool Alliance, 2016). It is proven that when children are alone after school, they not only miss out on valuable learning opportunities, but also their parents are affected as well by having to lose as many as eight work ...

The Walls We Put Up - Loneliness And Belonging In Urban Co-Living, Richard Rozewski 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

The Walls We Put Up - Loneliness And Belonging In Urban Co-Living, Richard Rozewski

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Concurrent issues of social isolation and loneliness have long been recognized as problems that affect seniors but it is also being proven to affect young people as well, specifically with the rise of new technologies and a perception of connectedness. Co-living provides one alternative design solution to traditional housing models which can unlock a range of social benefits.

MOTIVATION

Loneliness is an unfortunate reality of modern life and it is something that most people experience at least once in their life (Cacioppo & Patrick, 2008). A study carried out by Berguno, Leroux McAinsh, Shaikh (2004), showed that 80% of young people and over 40% of adults over the age of 65 experienced loneliness in the course of life. Good housing plays an important role in building community and strengthening social interaction and bonding. Co-living is a residential structure that accommodates three or more biologically unrelated people (Bothell, 2015; Tummers, 2015). It is commonly contained within a single dwelling, sub-divided into a combination of public and ...

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Millions of companion animals are placed in shelters annually, while a greater number of people struggle with some sort of disability. Designing an animal shelter that caters to these disabilities will allow those to be more comfortable in their environment. This creates an opportunity to foster stronger bonds with animals, increasing adoption rates.

Best Practices For Urban Coliving Communities, Rachel Osborne 2018 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Best Practices For Urban Coliving Communities, Rachel Osborne

Interior Design Program: Theses

Coliving, a new typology of housing design, has recently been gaining in popularity. Coliving is a form of rental housing that seeks to create community among its residents by providing features such as extensive shared spaces and community managers paired with typically small, furnished private spaces. Little architectural or interior design research is available to describe this emerging typology, and no best-practices or guiding principles exist to aid designers in making informed decisions when designing or evaluating coliving spaces.

This thesis uses a mixed-methods approach to understand the composition of existing coliving facilities as well as the motivations and preferences ...
