Finding Teaching Inspiration From Gorgias: Mathematics Lessons From A Sophist, Ann L. von Mehren 2019 Bowling Green State University

Finding Teaching Inspiration From Gorgias: Mathematics Lessons From A Sophist, Ann L. Von Mehren

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The logos or rational language of the fifth-century BCE teacher, Gorgias, as contained in the fragment On the Nonexistent, challenges a reader to understand the relationship between the existent and the nonexistent; yet the text also offers an accessible idea of logos. Inspired by William M. Priestley's approach to the study of logos through ratios, and by Ivor Grattan-Guinness's recommendation to broaden the study of historical texts in the history of mathematics and mathematics education, and pursue their significance in a heritage sense, this article suggests that this ancient non-mathematics text by Gorgias may inspire and refresh elementary ...

Where Dreams May Come: Incubation Sanctuaries In The Greco-Roman World, By Gil H. Renberg. Leiden; Boston : Brill 2017 (Book Review), Megan Nutzman

History Faculty Publications

[First paragraph] Gil Renberg has done the field an incredible service with the publication of this monumental and far-reaching study. In the preface, Renberg states that one of his primary goals is to offer scholars a single resource for ancient incubation across the Near Eastern and Classical worlds (XVI). He has done precisely this with an exhaustive treatment of textual and archaeological evidence for incubation, including quotations of relevant texts in both the original language and in translation, alongside complete publication histories. The Dream Work Of Sigmund Freud, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

The Dream Work Of Sigmund Freud, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

There are many correspondences between Freudian metapsychology and Plotinian metaphysics. Many of Freud’s ideas seem to be rooted in classical philosophy, although acknowledgement is rarely given. Plotinus is a fruitful source for understanding how the mind works. For Freud, unconscious words become conscious images, and unconscious images become conscious words, but these processes do not happen independently of each other. They are wrapped up in a dialectical process that is better understood by reading Plotinus.

Separate Places, Shared Spaces: Carnegie Libraries As Spaces Of Community And Learning For African Americans, 1900 To 1965, Matthew R. Griffis 2019 University of Southern Mississippi

Separate Places, Shared Spaces: Carnegie Libraries As Spaces Of Community And Learning For African Americans, 1900 To 1965, Matthew R. Griffis

Publications and Other Resources

This work examines twelve public libraries from the American South and how they served as learning and community-making spaces for African Americans in the age of Jim Crow. These libraries opened between 1908 and 1924 in Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas—and one northern state, Indiana. Some served as branches within larger, whites-only library systems; others, though publicly funded, were governed exclusively by African American boards. All were managed by African American librarians and staff. These twelve served as models, in many ways, for countless other “negro public libraries” opened in the South from the 1910s until ...

I will argue that in the thought of Plotinus, how we perceive the world around us is determined by how we use language.

In De Luce seu de inchoatione formarum, the treatise on light written between 1225 and 1228, Grosseteste explains that light is the first corporeal form, the origin of matter.

Theories Of Perception In Renaissance Humanism, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

Theories Of Perception In Renaissance Humanism, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

The hypostases of being consist of the terrestrial world of corporeal forms, dense, intertwined and in shadow; then the rationalization of the corporeal forms in the angelic mind; and finally the resolution of the forms in their absolute archetypal unity. The hypostases of being are modelled in the Universal Figure of Nicolas Cusanus, with the three figures of body, soul and mind inscribed in each of the three levels of the hierarchy, containing the nine choruses of Pseudo-Dionysius in the celestial hierarchies, representing the structure of the universe, as illustrated in a diagram, “Quator dictarum Monadum Schematica explicatio,” in Kircher ...

Immanuel Kant: Philosophy Of Perception, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

Immanuel Kant: Philosophy Of Perception, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

In an early treatise, Attempt to Introduce the Concept of Negative Magnitudes into Philosophy (Versuch, den Begriff der negative Grössen in die Weltweisheit einzuführen, 1763), Immanuel Kant developed a theory about thoughts that are fleeting, negated or cancelled, obscured or darkened. As certain thoughts become clearer, the other thoughts become less clear and more obscured (Verdunkelt). Kant’s concept was influenced by the petites perceptions of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. He invoked Leibniz in establishing that only a small portion of the representations which occur in the soul, as the result of sense perception, are clear and enduring.

Philosophy Of Perception In Hegel, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

Philosophy Of Perception In Hegel, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

According to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel in the Introductory Lectures on Aesthetics (The Introduction to Hegel’s Philosophy of Fine Art, 1886), beauty in art is a higher beauty than that of nature, because beauty in art is a product of the mind, or spirit, the intellectual rather than the sensory. In the Symposium of Plato, when the initiate learns to love all beautiful bodies rather than just one body, to “pursue the beauty of form” (210) rather than the beauty of the body, to turn away from the “low and small-minded slav-ery” of love for the beauty of a ...

Jacques Lacan And Language, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

Jacques Lacan And Language, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

According to Jacques Marie Emile Lacan in Écrits, the metonymic chain in language produces signification at a point which is the “anchoring point,” the point de capiton or button hole, which occurs retroactively, after the phrase is completed, and is the point at which the network of signifiers in the metonymic chain corresponds to a network of signifiers in the concept, the idea of mouth or river, for example, and thus accomplishes signification.

The Imaginary And Symbolic Of Jacques Lacan, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

The Imaginary And Symbolic Of Jacques Lacan, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

The principal categories of Lacanian psychoanalysis in the structuring of the psyche are the imaginary, the symbolic, and the real. The imaginary (imaginaire) refers to perceived or imagined images in conscious and unconscious thought, sensible and intelligible forms; picture thinking (Vorstellung), dream images or manifest content, and conscious ego in discursive thought. The symbolic (symbolique) refers to the signifying order, signifiers, in language, which determine the subject; it refers to the unconscious, and the intellectual, the logos endiathetos and the logos prophorikos. It is the relation between the imaginary and symbolic in conscious and unconscious thought which is the core ...

The Real And The Gaze Of Jacques Lacan, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

The Real And The Gaze Of Jacques Lacan, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

The third category of the psyche in Lacanian psychoanalysis is the real (réel), which is neither imaginary nor symbolic in conscious or unconscious thought, and which is inaccessible to psychoanalysis itself. The real is not reality in either a conceptual or phenomenological sense, which is the symbolic and the imaginary: it is only proposed as an algebraic concept, as it cannot be conceived.

The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John S. Hendrix 2019 Roger Williams University

The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John S. Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Language in the symbolic of Lacan is defined by the Other, which is the “intersubjectivity of the ‘we’ that it assumes,” as described in Écrits. The subject enters language in relationship to the other in perception, the per-ceived object or person, as recognized by the other. As described by Lacan, “What constitutes me as subject is my question. In order to be recognized by the other, I utter what was only in view of what will be [the future ante-rior of what I shall have been for what I am in the process of becoming].”

Naegele's Guide To The Only Good Architecture In Iowa, Daniel Joseph Naegele 2019 Iowa State University

Naegele's Guide To The Only Good Architecture In Iowa, Daniel Joseph Naegele

Architecture Books

Naegele’s Guide to the Only Good Architecture in Iowa is a deceptive title but it is not a misnomer. Guide is accurate. Iowa is fairly accurate. Naegele’s is there because this is a personal account, one that makes no attempt to be unbiased. Naegele’s qualifies Good, “good” being not absolute but contingent and personal and therefore a very questionable qualifier. Only is the title’s difficult word. “Only Good Architecture in Iowa” suggests that architecture is a scarce commodity in Iowa, a suggestion with which Naegele would agree if by “architecture” one means high architecture.

Historia Urbana Barrio Juan Pablo Ii Relaciones Sociales, Políticas Públicas Y Valor Del Suelo, Nicolás Alejandro Giraldo Calvo

Arquitectura

The urban history of a neighborhood has elements that transcend, historical elements that establish moments, that divide and generate key factors to understand the process of construction and consolidation of an informal neighborhood, those elements respond to two matters, which are related and generate a change in the use of land, in the first place the social relations generated by the population, as an inhabitant of the territory, and secondly, public policy as organizer of the same; but it is key to analyze that social relations as an individual concept, are producers of politics, a social group to create an ...
