Community and Regional Planning Proceedings, Papers, and Posters

In order to better understand community resilience following a disaster, a multidisciplinary research team from the Center of Excellence (CoE) for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) jointly conducted a series of longitudinal field studies in the U.S. city of Lumberton, North Carolina following major flooding from Hurricane Matthew (2016). Damage surveys on structures and interviews with households were conducted during the first field study to explore physical, economic, and social impacts of major riverine flooding on this small, tri-racial community. This paper is focused on damage to housing and subsequent household ...

Integrative Modeling Of Housing Recovery As A Physical, Economic, And Social Process, Elaina J. Sutley, Sara Hamideh, Maria K. Dillard, Donghwan Gu, Kijin Seong, John W. Van De Lindt

Community and Regional Planning Proceedings, Papers, and Posters

This paper presents a novel approach to modeling housing recovery through the formulation of recovery-based fragility functions built on empirical data collected longitudinally after a recent flood disaster. Previous community resilience frameworks have not addressed social and economic considerations in engineering-based recovery modeling. In doing so, this work takes an important step forward, advancing the use of probability and statistics in civil engineering applications and facilitating their role in interdisciplinary analysis of post-disaster recovery. To address community housing recovery after a flood event, two recovery-based limit states were analyzed: repair completion and re-occupancy. Two least squares regression models identified the ...

"The Cornerstone And Abode Of Our National Progress": New York City's Skyscrapers As An American Story Of Innovation And Teamwork, Meghan Hamel 2019 University of Puget Sound

"The Cornerstone And Abode Of Our National Progress": New York City's Skyscrapers As An American Story Of Innovation And Teamwork, Meghan Hamel

History Theses

This paper examines the early history of skyscrapers using New York City as its case study. Skyscrapers become possible because of the Industrial Revolution which provided the steel needed for its tall structure and the demand for office space. The early skyscrapers were both praised and criticized by the public. Concerns over the health, economic, and aesthetic consequences led to the passing of the 1916 Zone Ordinance. Following the ordinance, New York City saw a boom of skyscrapers and the creation of a uniquely American architectural style. Before all skyscraper construction completely halted, the Empire State Building was completed. It ...

Concrete Poetry, Sara Ghazi Asadollahi 2019 Washington University in St. Louis

Concrete Poetry, Sara Ghazi Asadollahi

Graduate School of Art Theses

This text addresses my work as an artist and defines it in the context of the following subjects: The concept of ruins, which highlights the relationship between architecture and landscape; the formal and metaphorical dialectic between absence and presence in abandoned places; and the idea of dystopia, which emerges from that in-between space where the real dissolves into the imaginary. At the same time, my work is inspired by the visual culture of cinema and literature, principally within the science-fiction genre, and draws upon my observation of abandoned buildings in Tehran, my native city. These urban ruins are products of ...

Mapping In The Humanities: Gis Lessons For Poets, Historians, And Scientists, Emily W. Fairey

Open Educational Resources

User-friendly Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is the common thread of this collection of presentations, and activities with full lesson plans. The first section of the site contains an overview of cartography, the art of creating maps, and then looks at historical mapping platforms like Hypercities and Donald Rumsey Historical Mapping Project. In the next section Google Earth Desktop Pro is introduced, with lessons and activities on the basics of GE such as pins, paths, and kml files, as well as a more complex activity on "georeferencing" an historic map over Google Earth imagery. The final section deals with ARCGIS Online ...

Plant Ethics Or An Environment For The Birth Of A New Human? An Exploration In Radical Ethics For Sustainable Architecture., Andrea S. Wheeler 2019 Iowa State University

Plant Ethics Or An Environment For The Birth Of A New Human? An Exploration In Radical Ethics For Sustainable Architecture., Andrea S. Wheeler

Andrea S. Wheeler

This paper critically examines literature concerned with an ethics in the multiplicity of different approaches to the design of sustainable architecture. Sustainable design theorists commonly argue for the need to perceive the world differently, to find new ways to live, to create new values to replace old: questions of ethics are implicit in such explorations.

The Metamorphic Model: A Test In Post-Millennial Living, Andrew Mesa

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The Metamorphic Model is a look into future Millennial Urban living through an experiment to create a building prototype per the needs and wants for future architecture. It focuses on creating a building infrastructure which creates social environments for the residents and the community alike through a modular system of units supported by building infrastructure which lifts and moves the units into the desired slot. The goal is to oppose to typical buildings format which takes time to modify and adapt to changing conditions and highlight the trends moving into the future. The idea of the project is to take ...

Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances 2019 University of New Mexico

Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

Centered around the public arena of institutional architecture and its impact on the social being, in this recent work, entitled, Isolate to a Controllable Space, I focus on questions such as how do public environments work to sustain and reiterate meaning through our own sense of where we should be, or where we are permitted to be. I use photography to approach questions that ask how do systems and infrastructures obtain functionality through our participation; acknowledging that systems are conductors of the personal and participatory process of identification and categorization.

The Farnsworth House & 'The Grand Budapest Hotel': Cinematic Spaces, Rylie Davis 2019 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

The Farnsworth House & 'The Grand Budapest Hotel': Cinematic Spaces, Rylie Davis

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

Mies van der Rohe designed the Farnsworth House as a personification of his architectural vision, an architectural language void of the mistakes of the past that could be taught universally. Mies’ illusory idea of free-flowing anti-space was ideologically unconnected to the cinematic arts, nevertheless the application of his design philosophy consequently resulted in spaces that were scenographic and cinematic. Just as a cinematographer establishes a relationship between the viewer and the scene, Mies van der Rohe used perspective to frame views transforming the Farnsworth House into an intermediary object establishing a relationship between nature and the viewer. The Farnsworth House ...

Big Data And Adolescent Play In Public Space, Benjamin A. Shirtcliff 2019 Iowa State University

Big Data And Adolescent Play In Public Space, Benjamin A. Shirtcliff

Benjamin A Shirtcliff

Significant strides have been made through design and policy on “youth rights to the city” toward improve young people’s health and wellbeing outcomes. However, adolescents, especially minorities, are frequently confronted with institutionalized disparities as they are denied access to participate in urban, public space, through policy (e.g., posted ‘no loitering’ placards), policy implementation (e.g., police profiling and monitoring), and physical barriers (e.g., skate stops). The current situation has led to a lack of adequate data to support design and policy to improve youth outcomes because: 1. only within the past decade have young people been recognized ...

Socially Open Urban Landscapes, Benjamin A. Shirtcliff

Benjamin A Shirtcliff

Socially Open Urban Landscapes (SOUL) is an exciting new approach to understanding the relationship between urban design and public life in cities through play. Play is a fundamental human trait that crosses gender, age, racial, ethnic, and cultural lines; and, represents a critical point of departure for creating cities that support heterogeneous social interactions.

Reassessing The Neustadt As A Site Of Outstanding Cultural Value, Sophie Higgerson 2019 College of William and Mary

Reassessing The Neustadt As A Site Of Outstanding Cultural Value, Sophie Higgerson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis explores the logic of preservation behind the extension of Strasbourg's World Heritage Site to include the Neustadt, a development built by the German administration between 1870 and 1916. Divided into three sections focusing on the Neustadt master plan, the Orangerie/Conseil des XV neighborhood, and the Grande Percée, the paper reframes the interchange of French and German planning practices in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Narrating Public Space: Franz Kafka In Nationalized Prague, Jordan Wyner 2019 College of William and Mary

Narrating Public Space: Franz Kafka In Nationalized Prague, Jordan Wyner

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes Franz Kafka’s representation of public space by situating his short fiction in the context of how Prague’s public spaces transformed around the fin-de-siècle. During the Czech National Revival, the Czech educated and semi-educated middle-class sought to transform Prague from a nationally undifferentiated space, shared by both Czech- and German-speakers, to one exclusively promoting a Czech national identity. The German middle-class responded by also publicly expressing its own national identity and values. Indeed, middle-class civic society in nineteenth century and early-twentieth century Prague brought changes to urban space to create distinct spaces oriented around the language ...
