Modernity In Miniature: Maoism And The Beijing Department Store, Samuel M. Hellmann
All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the Beijing Department Store as a contradictory structure embedded in the world’s largest Communist revolution. By looking at the urban planning decisions behind constructing a colonial form in the center of the socialist capital, I attempt to unravel the complex intersection of economic development and egalitarian mass action in the early Maoist period. Constructed in 1955 during the first Five Year Plan, the Department Store sheds light on the specific parameters of post-revolution modernization campaigns. Furthermore, by looking at the conceptualizations of the building by the Party, architects, and the workers inside the store, I examine ...
Rights Of The Way: Investigations Of Streetness, 2020 University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Rights Of The Way: Investigations Of Streetness, Mike Lidwin
Haslam Scholars Projects
Current urban planning often valorizes large scale interventions in the city, reducing the complexity of the street into a mere element for beautification, redirection, or compartmentalization. In doing so, urban planning glosses over the impact that small-scale interventions can have in affecting larger urban metabolisms. This project explores architecture’s capacity to reengage public infrastructure with streetness, which describes the underlying quality and latent situations that occur along the street’s contested territory.
Rights of the Way addresses issues of agency. It delights in the possibility that individuals can control access to urban spaces and author public life. It involves ...

The Factories: Bringing A Derelict Icon Into The New Age, Douglas Reid
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The Chatillion Factories were constructed in 1927, and added on to in subsequent years. The factories \changed owners and purposes many times over the following decades, until at some point in the 90’s the factories were left mostly abandoned. This industrial complex occupies some prime real estate near downtown Rome. It is just under a mile from the rapidly growing Broad Street, a quarter of a mile to State Mutual Stadium, and right across the road from Ridge Ferry Park. As such, it has the potential to act as a central location to help unite these three nodes of ...

I Hear You Now, I See You Then, Quinn Hunter
Art + Design Masters Theses
In the research driven project I Hear You Now, I See You Then, I refer to the contemporary and historical erasure of the labor of African American women using research gathered from the southern plantation economy to create an art installation. The objects in this installation are primarily made with artificial hair integrations and utilizing labor intensive methods that are similar to those used to install the hair on the Black body. The objects I make reference the luxury items in the domestic spaces of historic plantation sites that have been re-branded to be used in the wedding /tourism industry ...

Rethinking The Genesis Of Mudéjar Architecture In Medieval Toledo, 2020 William & Mary
Rethinking The Genesis Of Mudéjar Architecture In Medieval Toledo, Elizabeth Dowker
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Following the surrender of Toledo to Alfonso VI of Castile-León in 1085 C.E., shifting political and religious power remolded the social fabric and land ownership of the city. As the former capitol of the Visigothic empire and one of the cities on the ‘frontier’ of a hegemonically Christian Spain, Toledo was a nexus of the manifestation of Reconquest ideology for Castilian Christians. Religious buildings in Toledo constructed or expanded during the twelfth- through fourteenth-centuries express stylistic adaptation and growth. However, the terminology used to describe this architecture needs further clarification. This thesis suggests that with respect to Toledo, the ...
Walkability Of Suburban Retrofits Of The Washington Dc Area: Immersion Into Qualitative Constructs, 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
Walkability Of Suburban Retrofits Of The Washington Dc Area: Immersion Into Qualitative Constructs, David Sweere
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
The majority of the United States population is living in the suburbs, and yet the suburban built fabric has developed with spatial conditions that have failed to prove their efficacy on environmental, social or economic terms. Most contemporary architectural and urban theorists agree that the suburban condition is inherently problematic. In a 2010 Ted Talk, architect and urban designer Ellen Dunham-Jones discusses the problematic state of the suburban built condition, citing dependence on the vehicle, sparseness of built form, environmental costs, transportation costs, and even increased obesity rates (Dunham-Jones 2010). Because the suburbs comprise the majority of our “urbanized” areas ...

El Quijote En Alcalá De Henares: Graffiti, Arte Urbano Y Autorrepresentación, Juan Fernandez Cantero
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Acts Of Meaning, Resource Diagrams, And Essential Learning Behaviors: The Design Evolution Of Lost & Found, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber
Lost & Found is a tabletop-to-mobile game series designed for teaching medieval religious legal systems. The long-term goals of the project are to change the discourse around religious laws, such as foregrounding the prosocial aspects of religious law such as collaboration, cooperation, and communal sustainability. This design case focuses on the evolution of the design of the mechanics and core systems in the first two tabletop games in the series, informed by over three and a half years’ worth of design notes, playable prototypes, outside design consultations, internal design reviews, playtests, and interviews.

Interactions With The Narrative Of Jewish Suffering: Methods Of Interaction And Development Of Memory At The Denkmal Für Die Ermordeten Juden Europas, Maggie Fisher
Honors Theses at the University of Iowa
The historical narrative is a living entity easily influenced by interpretation and reinterpretation of ideologies, events, and conflicts. The development of a concrete narrative surrounding events, such as the Holocaust, can mask or expose horrifying crimes against humanity. The public memorial is one of many tools used by societies to help shape the events of the past into the rhetoric of the future. After the close of the Second World War, Germany became a state riddled with memorials attempting to integrate the horrors of the Holocaust with a continuously developing German identity. These monuments and the narratives they embodied explicitly ...

Foster Rhodes Jackson And The Visual Conquest Of The West, Eve Kaufman
Scripps Senior Theses
Colonizers settled the Los Angeles and the Southern California region in part by using Modernism’s visual rhetoric and propagandic implications during the time of suburban sprawl. Suburban sprawl refers to the mass single family home development which took place from the 1920s until now but peaked from the 1970s to the 1990s. Los Angeles sprawl grew particularly in the 1950s as soldiers returned from WWII. It was a way for middle class white families to accrue generational wealth and follow through on the American Dream.
The primary result however disenfranchised already marginalized groups. This ...

Cartographier L’Essor D’Un Modèle : Le Chapiteau Ionique De Michel-Ange De L’Invention Au Début Du Xviie Siècle, Federica Vermot
This study proposes to map the propagation of an alternative type of ionic capital invented by Michelangelo in 1563. We proceed to a comparative analysis of the new buildings erected in Rome from the invention of the new capital to the beginning of the 17th century, in order to highlight spatial and temporal correlations peculiar to its diffusion. The study of this issue allows to understand the perception of the capital that the next generation of roman architects developed, which is a less known aspect of Michelangelo's reception. Overall, it invites to shape the stylistic evolution of an architectural ...
Saving Software And Using Emulation To Reproduce Computationally Dependent Research Results, Euan Cochrane, Limor Peer, Ethan Gates, Seth Anderson
Yale Day of Data
Using digital data necessarily involves software. How do institutions think about software in the context of the long-term usability of their data assets? How do they address usability challenges uniquely posed by software such as, license restrictions, legacy software, code rot, and dependencies? These questions are germane to the agenda set forth by the FAIR principles. At Yale University, a team in the Library is looking into the application of a novel approach to emulation as a potential solution. In this presentation, we will outline the work of the Emulation as a Service Infrastructure (EaaSI) program, discuss our plans for ...
The Cornaro Chapel Or The Culminiation Of Bernini's Bel Composto, 2019 Colgate University Libraries
The Cornaro Chapel Or The Culminiation Of Bernini's Bel Composto, Damien Vacherot 2010
Colgate Academic Review
How does one achieve unity, both of form and meaning, in the visual arts? Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Cornaro Chapel in the Carmelite church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome surely comes close to answering this question. Indeed it represents the culminiation of the art historical concept of the bel composto. The term, which can be translated as "beautiful whole" refers to the simultaneous use of painting, sculpture, and architecture to enhance the viewer's experience of the piece represented. I was particularly fascinated by the spatial and rhetorical relationship between the different mediums used in the chapel. The techniques ...

Metaphor And Simile As A Design Tool To Use Intangible Heritage In Contemporary Architecture- An Approach To Maintain Identity And Cultural Authenticity- Case Of Gaza City, Ahed Helles
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
Historical buildings are considered a source of architectural inspiration and a key determinant to maintain continuity with the past and preserve cities identity. Unfortunately. most of the historical buildings in Gaza city had been diminished from the fabric making the city as if it has no historical roots, not only because of the scarcity of its historical architecture but also because of its contemporary architecture which seems empty from cultural contents and meanings. However, the city is rich with its intangible heritage which can be invested to fill the vacuum as a source of architectural inspiration. The study proposed that ...

The Rural Landscape As Heritage In Turkey Under Changing Climate // Le Paysage Rural Turque, Un Patrimoine Soumis Au Changement Climatique, Gul Aktürk
Rural Heritage - Landscapes and Beyond / PATRIMOINE RURAL: Paysages et au-delà
The various determinants of vernacular architecture embrace ethnic cultural diversity, morals, climate, cultural and geographical setting, topography, political attitude, religion and language spoken which shaped the rural built heritage in Fındıklı in the Black Sea region. Yet, climate change hazards such as river flooding, more frequent erosion and landslides affect not only local communities’ livelihoods but also the rural cultural landscape. There are important lessons this rural landscape as heritage holds, in terms of their past climate practices, that we can learn from including craftsmanship, traditional construction techniques, materials and local practices to tackle the current and future conditions of ...

Rural Heritage - Landscapes and Beyond / PATRIMOINE RURAL: Paysages et au-delà
During the 20th Century, rural landscapes all over the world underwent rapid transformations as a result of many factors - including new socio-political and economic conditions, new agricultural practices and the mechanization of agriculture - resulting in radical transformations of land uses and in the introduction of new infrastructures and facilities, necessary for the storage and distribution of an ever increasing amount of products. Based on the existing documents and bibliography relevant to the topic (ICOMOS-IFLA, Principles concerning rural landscapes as heritage, 2017; ICOMOS-ISC20C, Madrid-New Delhi Document.
